Titanium Whistle gems looking for new homes!

Hi everyone,

was looking for a very long time, couldn't find what I wanted, made it myself.

Tubular, 40 mm x 7.5 mm, reed and body made from one piece so the reed can't ever fall out, end plug fitted with press fit, key ring hole goes through end plug and body, satin matte blasted finish, titanium is the only material used throughout.

Made in New Zealand by skilled people who get paid a fair salary as well. Why? Because I want it that way.

This whistle is neither designed nor manufactured to price, and I don't expect nor have the desire to satisfy the average customer or sell thousands of them. The only thing this whistle had in its design brief was to achieve the maximum possible quality in every aspect. I think it is safe to say that it is one of the finest whistles around.

Photos are of very early aluminium prototype to give you an idea only; final product is of a totally different quality level, of course. I've used up all the titanium protos for machining experiments, so no photos currently.

The first batch will be finished in early February. Early Bird pricing (85 USD) and special lottery if you order by 12th January. Normal pricing (95 USD) if you order and pay by 6th of February. Two whistles = free shipping. Three or more = 10% discount.

If you are interested, flick me a message and I'll let you know more.

You can also find it at the EDC Forums (www.edcforums.com) in "Makers, Manufacturers and Dealers Announcements".

As soon as I have found out if / where / how it is ok with CPF policies, I'll post details here, too. Greta, I hope this does not conflict with forum rules; I really tried to work out if / where to post this and truly couldn't. Please let me know if I need to change anything.

Have a nice day everyone!

Cheers,

Matt

I'm never too far from a AMS (Doug Ritter) Pocket Survival Pak. I've got about six of the things. Car, backpack, house, ditch kit, rucksack, water bottle pouch etc. They've got plastic whistles in them.

The one that I EDC is the Acme Slimline Tornado (#636).

It is loud, shrill and seems to have trilling quality (probably due to interference of the three frequencies) which makes it very noticeable - which is what a whistle is supposed to do.

It may not be the loudest rated - but it sounds to my ears as loud as the claimed world's loudest rated Acme Tornado 2000 ("world's most powerful whistle at 122 decibels. 4350 hz hi and special 3650 hz lo creates long wave lengths to travel further").

The Storm is very loud but with a deeper tone - but it is huge!

The Tornado 2000, Fox 40 and Mini have flanges imitating the shape/chamber of a pea whistle - they could be filed/sawed to a more slimline profile.

The Seron and Kiefer are (traditional) pea whistles which have the advantage of trilling/variable tone that get attention but pealess whistles can be made slimmer and if the tones are chosen right can have a trilling effect - which I feel the Slimline Tornado does.

You can listen to Acme whistles on their website:

I carry one whistle in my watch pocket and a second on my key ring. I don't use them often, although I recall using a whistle to get my wife's attention when we became separated while exploring and we lost sight of each other

I have a Ti whistle as well. But mine is a generic one I got at Unique Titanium. Don't carry it everyday though.

Today, I used the flat, plastic ACR WW-3 whistle I EDC to get the attention of a neighbor's horse. It had escaped from the corral and was galloping wildly around my back field, spooked by a pair of barking dogs.

I tried whistling with my lips, but the horse was about 300 feet away and didn't hear me, so I used the ACR whistle. That got the horse's attention and it stopped to resume grazing peacefully.

For 7 years I carried around THE blazing orange fox40 and it had been plenty useful when needed.

I got a Kifaru Xray for sometime and realise that the clip buckle for the sternum strap has got a built in tiny whistle. Although not as loud its pretty noticeable.
