I was given a Journey's Edge, "Dual-Powered" LED Lantern, sold at Menards home centers (USA):

It has 12 LEDs, a brightness adjustment control, and runs on either 4D cells or a 6 VDC wall wart (not supplied).

This gave me a chance to perform a preliminary comparison with my 4AA River Rock 1.5 watt single LED lantern, sold at Target (USA) and reviewed here:

I loaded the Journey's Edge lantern with 4 fresh alkaline D cells and powered the River Rock with 4 AA alkaline cells which already had 4 hours of continuous usage.

The River Rock lantern powered by old batteries lights up as much of the room or a little more than the considerably larger, heavier Journey's Edge lantern with fresh batteries at its brightest intensity setting.

Light from the Journey's Edge lantern has a bluer tint than the light emitted by the River Rock lantern.

I have not conducted battery life measurements for the Journey's Edge lantern.

I picked up one of these Journey's Edge Lanterns for 7.98 at Steve and Barry's University Sportswear store. They are usually located in Mall's and carry a variety of clothing items, and a few other things for 7.98. For 8 bucks I can't complain about the quality of this light. It lights up a room, probably will be good for camping or sitting out on the balcony. Works fine with AA D Cell adapters. Probably not as good as the River Rock, but at the price I picked up a sack of these for some $10 gift exchanges I have.
