I have a TIROS T2, which I love! Great beam & build quality. I was thinking about getting either the new T1 (I don't care for the floody beam, but it's great size for travel), or the T2 (for the beam & throw). My question is...The T1 is the same diameter as the older T2, so why did Inova make the main body tube of the new T2 smaller diameter than the T1 or older T2? The smaller diameter = thinner wall. With a longer light, I would think the thicker wall of the T1 would be better. I wonder if Inova thinned the wall thinking the overall light would look better. Any thoughts?

The actual wall thickness of the TIROS lights is probably a lot less than you believe. The walls are only thick around the batteries and thin out after that.My guess is that Emissive Energy(INOVA) no longer needed the large size of the old T2 with the elimination of the TIROS lens and decided to go with a smaller more familiar design. As far as performance is concerned there is no comparison the new T2 blows the old one away.I like the TIROS lens for some applications but it lacks a current LED and I have been spoiled by the 2008 T-series and other brighter lights. If you like the TIROS T2 maybe you should consider a TIROS T1.Runtime is much less(the original T1 only uses one battery)but my TIROS T2 is only marginally brighter than my TIROS T1.I'm not sure how hard it is to find the TIROS T1s but some retailers may have old stock.

For most practical uses, I'm not sure there is any point to buying a surefire 6PL over a T1/T2-MP.
After the price increase, the 6PL lists $89 and the T1 goes for about $50, which is almost half.
Plus the P60L module has kind of a crappy tint. Tint isn't usually a big deal to me, but then it costs twice as much and it's not any brighter.

However, i've had a couple inova T series switches crap out on me, but fortunately inova support is very good. Surefire isn't exactly flawless here either, my friend's E2DL switch also crapped out, so imo it's a wash.

Inova should consider switching back to the SS bezel though, the AL bezel gets chipped or mangled really easily.

Agreed on all points! I have a 2008 T2MP and I love it. It's a solid, well made light that has great throw and very nice light tint. My bezel has some chipping from use as well.. Wish it was SS. My switch cap hasn't given me any trouble.

They changed to anodized aluminum due to complaints about the reflections from the stainless steel. There was much discussion about this change over.
Since the bezel ring unscrews (at least on my 2008 T1) it could be possible for an aftermarket stainless steel bezel ring to me made...

I don't think the diameter has anything to do with light being TIROS or not, as the new T1 is the same diameter as the TIROS T1 & T2. It just struck me as odd that the new T1 is 1.0" diameter, and the new T2 has a main tube diameter of .865". On another note, how floody is the new T1, and how does it compare (output) to the TIROS T2? As I said, I have the TIROS T2...will I be dissapointed if I get the new T1 for travel?

The new T1-MP has a lot more flood than the TIROS T2. Though the T1-MP is not a thrower, it throws at least as far as my TIROS T2 and two XO2s (the "civilian equivalent" of the TIROS T2) and the T1-MP is easier to carry due to its shorter length.

The T1-MP's output makes the my TIROS T2 look anemic and they have roughly equivalent runtimes.

The tint on the T1-MP has a golden cast due to the LED used.

I tried taking the bezel off for you and cannot, at least by hand. It does not look removable to me. Sorry I'm not about to take tools to it.

The head definitely has locktite.

Happy Holidays

The TIROS is fairly unusual and is much longer than a conventional lens.It actually resembles a sabot slug when viewed from the side if you have never seen a cut-away illustration. Some of the length of the light is taken up by the TIROS though and I think the 1" diameter is required to house it.When the design was changed to a conventional reflector they were able to add an extra battery to the T1 and the design is so good I doubt they wanted to change it.The old T2's length is no longer necessary to accomodate two batteries and the design was changed probably because of market research.I don't have definitive facts on the matter but that is my guess.
While I liked the TIROS lights I agree with everything parnass posted in his reply.I don't think you will be dissapointed with the new T1 unless you dislike the warm tint. Not everyone likes warmer tints but I have found that they are better than cool white when the light is used outdoors.

The two T2s I own have different tints. One has a tint just like my T1s.The other has a slightly warm tint but it is much closer to neutral and looks very white compared to the other T2 and my T1s.When I compare this light to a CREE P4 it appears to be warmer.Unfortunately there is still seems to be a lottery for tint but of the 5 2008 T-series lights I purchased the T2 I mentioned is the only one that is not obviously warm.
