Newly Enlightened
Hey all,
I am pretty well versed in flashlight stuff, and have a few projects under my belt. However, Lasers honestly baffle me...
I am a SWAT officer, and am wanting to see if something would be possible, and if so, what it would take to build such a laser.
We currently use a suppressed .22 pistol to "extinguish" street lamps and such prior to an approach. This, however, causes damage to light fixtures and the like, as well as showering people and object below with hot glass particles.
I know that if a light's filament gets overheated, it will burn up. With this in mind, I need answers to the following.
Would a laser aimed at a street light bulb be able to heat the bulb to the point of exhaustion. If so, what mW laser might this take? I know anything over 5 mW is illegal for civilians in the US, however from what I can tell, LEO's are exempt from possessing these types of devices, and should be able to obtain them from overseas without violating any FDA regulations. (I still think it is weird that they oversee lasers...) I have seen the instructions for using the laser from a DVD burner to make a laser that will pop a balloon, however I just don't think that would be powerful enough, or have the range to do what we need.
Also, would a laser of a certain output be sufficient for disabling a surveillance camera. We encounter a lot of nefarious sorts who like to "guard" their humble abodes with numerous small IR cameras of the type that can be easily obtained off of the internet. Needless to say, we can't exactly shoot these out like a street light.
Your help will honestly be greatly appreciated. Of our tactics, we hold the ability to disorient, confuse, and suprise in the highest regard. This honestly saves lives, and the more tools we have at our disposal to accomplish these tasks, the more likely it is we will go home to our families.
In addition, if anyone has the access to the items needed for this, and the expertise to build it, I will pay for the build.
Cheers, and thank you all in advance!
