I have an Solarforce R2 5mode and I was wanting to see what is needed to make it a direct drive so that it could run off an 18650 as bright as possible .?

Eeeeeeeer have you thought of just swapping drivers ...

My Solarforce R2 runs real bright ..

http://www.kaidomain.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductId=1845 Is Direct drive on Hi [ Sorry - keep forgetting ]

Currently liking this driver ... Its feeding my P4 Cree o.7mA to o.8mA dep on which 18650 Batt I use .

My Solarforce R2 draws over 1.0A on Hi ... CREE R2 (114-120 Lumens @ 350ma) I think I measured 1.1A with Protected Ultrafire 18650 2400mA Batts . When they claim 300Lumen , , the figures almost back it up .
This is stock L2 . Im waiting for more drivers to see if any are  for getting the best from a Cree R2 ..

But I cant complain about my L2 ! And I dont think im going to mess with it .
Now the ultrafires on the other hand :naughty:

Are you asking what needs to be to run it single mode on a single 18650?

is a good discussion on XRE forward voltage especially the R2. Ideally the R2 Vf is 3.7 volts.
You should be able to direct drive the battery onto the R2 with no driver or resistor.
