I've searched the forum and although there are lists for P60 hosts and P60 drop-ins, I can't find a list of budget lights that take a 20mm star.

Most P60 drop-ins have leds mounted on 12-16mm bases, however, many of the pre-mounted emitters come on 20mm stars.

Over a year ago, I purchased an led flashlight for my shotgun (light is from Mako security) advertised at 130 lumens.

However, having increased my knowledge and number of flashlights I decided to modify this light. After dissembling it, I found that the pill contained a 20mm star. (LED unknown, perhaps an Edison Opto KLC8).

I dropped in a Cree Q5 on a 20mm star that I had and after a minute of soldering I had a much brighter light.

That got me thinking, how come there aren't more 20mm star lights? And why can't I find Pill/Reflector combos that take 20mm stars?

Any thoughts?

You normally don't see this light come up in the budget light discussions, but the Dorcy Super 1-watt CR123A light takes a 20mm star.

The common mod for this light is to swap out the Luxeon I star for a Seoul P4 U-bin star and slightly modify the base of the reflector.

It doubles the output without impacting the lights "battery vampire" status.

I think Surefire is to blame for the de facto standard of P60 drop-ins and I don't see the disadvantage of that. Many emitters are available on 14mm or even 10mm round bases. In fact I would like to see a smaller standard drop-in for 1 or 2 AA lights.

I'd agree on the AA lights, and even another drop-in size for AAA lights. However, I'm just wondering why there aren't drop-ins for 20mm stars as MC-E, SST-50/90, SCC P7 lights all benefit for the better heat dissipation provided by larger bases.

I think the heat problem is not how big the base is, but the heat transfer to the pill and to the outer walls of the head. In the beginning P60s where incandescent modules and heat was not an issue. Remember the first heat transfer is only like 4 mm² for some emitter dies to the base plate.

MArket is driven by Demand and supply ...
If there is no demand , then there is no supply .

And who is going the shell out for a custom job for a budget light ?
Its DIY time ...

And one of the main problems would be parts compatibility , which is why P60 has so many options [ after market parts ] ..

I still have my first LED light , Romisen RL-B7 [Luxeon][then P4], by removing the screw in pill , I can drop in a P60 pill :naughty: , now its 3 mode XP-G R5 .

Lights I know of right off:
  • Coleman MAX 3AAA
  • Brinkmann 2D
I suspect some of the other Coleman 3xAAAs also use it...

There's several advantages over P60:
  • No need for buying another reflector with each drop-in.
  • Easier compatibility with larger reflectors, aspherics, or TIR optics.
  • Better compatibility with >18mm hosts (P60 needs ledge for - spring)
  • Better (and more consistent among various manufacturers) thermal interface.
While I understand the benefit of a pre-focused, no-tools drop-in, there's certainly room for the star-base LEDs, particularly in larger lights. I just wish there were a similarly interchangeable form-factor for drivers -- I might have a lot more patience with multimode lights in general if whichever one was riding in the primary slot on my belt (this week) could easily be swapped to single-mode.
