I couldn't help myself after 350fire let us know about the 5*XP-G drop-in. Uncle Klem has gone and bought one!

I have to say it's pretty impressive when compared against the beam quality of the Ugly Light. It's a perfect fit in a Maglite. As a replacement head in the UglyLight it would need some major machining in a lathe. Both torches would need a switch circuit to be added. Unsure if there is enough metal contact between the head and body in a Maglite for extended use, however I imagine there is.

I've taken some comparison beamshots.

(See the improved beamshots in my post below).

I measure 2.15A at 7.8V which means it's a 17watt torch. The 3*XR-E Terralux drop-in is 12watts. Don't know what the Ugly light is (anyone?)

I ordered the single-mode version. Straight on/off...no disco modes.

The new drop-in will be replacing the Terralux in that Maglite. The waterproofed Maglite has 2 D size Li-ion's so should give about 2hrs glow time (the WL500 torch it's in in the photo is not a dive torch)

Took it out walking the dog last night...when it's this bright it starts to feel like a weapon!

the two bottom pictures are saturated while the upper right is nearly saturated. If you choose your settings to prevent saturation on the HID, it will give an even better impression of the differences.

thanks for sharing.

any idea what driver is used in the 5xXPG? (sorry if this was already mentionned elsewhere...)

What's a good setting on my digital camera to prevent this?

It's a standard pocket digital camera (Optio 550, 5megapixel 5* optical mag) which I mounted on a tripod for the shots. shutter speed goes from 4 to 1/1000, and F Stop 7.9 to 2.8

Normally I take shots on 'automatic' and the camera chooses the setting, but given the different torch light intensities I figured it would compensate for the different beams and spoil the comparison.

I don't know what the good settings are. can you display a histogram on the screen? this would allow you to see when there are pixels in saturation (if there are pixels in the histogram that are on the right side of the histogram, there are pixels in saturation (in the image)).

I guess you can choose both shutter speed and f number. F5.6 is an intermediate setting, so increase that to start with (higher number is a smaller diaphragm so less light will go to the sensor).

if the picture of the HID still has areas that are really white (or if you cant increase the F number), use a higher shutter speed (=shorter exposure time which I think your camera shows you, 1/1000 is the shortest exposure time). Since the HID is the most intense, if that one is not saturated, the others will also not be saturated and the comparison will make more sense.

hope this helps

OK let's give this another try...

Had a read of beamshot settings on other threads, and take your point about saturation. I've used the brightest torch as the exemplar for settings and kept them the same for the other three.

F6.5, shutter 1/400, AWB Off. 1M distance from wall. Torches 1M also.

Don't know what the driver is without going to the effort of soldering it apart

I got an ultrafire Cree MC-e-1000L with 5 Cree MC-E and Oh my god ......

The beam is Gorgeous ! at 1 meter measure around 26,000 LUX With 4x 3.7v mAh bright white beam and perfectly round.....

I also had a Romisen with 5 led's :knight:
