Eos on left vs HDS B42 both on high
very useful beam, well worth the minimal effort.

Nice work.

Did you have to mod the ims17?

Not too bad. If you want a smoother beam a drilled out McR18 gives an outstanding beam from an XR-E.

Was that the optimal focal point for the IMS?

probably sanded 3-4 mm off the bottom of the reflector. bought the eos pre-modded with a ROXH and the ims17. It was pretty good before, but the useful spill is much greater with the cree.

Hi Pumaman,

Nice mod. It even seems that I would be able to do that. Anyway, it is clearly worth trying it. So I just ordered some Crees... and hopefully I will make my first "mod"

What sort of runtime do you get with that mod?

update.

decided to try the mcr17xr reflector from the sandwich shoppe. Had to file off about 3 mm off the front to fit it in the eos. Taking that much off the front gives the reflector a little bit of the famous dark ring in the beam, but not enought to affect real-world use. and as you can see its much better than the ims17. now a beautiful, bright beam in a compact headlamp:rock:

seems to be about the same as stock, 2+ hours on high. Seems like medium is bright enough for most things though.

What sort of cooling do yo have to give to the Cree on the star? I can't see any. How long could you run it safely on high say?

LOCO is more like it.
There is no additional heat sinking from the factory, so you get the same thing with the replacement. You just get more light. They do get hot on high, and we guess that's what the temp sensor is for - to back off the current at a certain temp.

Anyone have a hankering to try this mod with a Q5 Cree? I sure am. :)

Is there any better reflector to use than the mcr17xr reflector?

I guess spending time sanding it down isn't too terribly horrible. That way I can be sure it is a tight fit, unlike the loosey goosey IMS17.

Just got a WG Q5 Cree in and swapped out the Lux out of another PT EOS.

Now I guess I'll have to get a mcr17xr reflector. Right now, it's running like a Mule. Spill is noticeably brighter than my WO U-Bin SSC P4.

Did you use the black plastic optic/reflector holder at all? Or did you just tape it like in the pic and let the pressure hold it when enclosed?

If my Q5's ever arrive, I DO think I'll get that hankering to toss one into this thing with a Mcr17xr. Can't wait... though I have to....
