I am reporting the result of my suicital attempt of putting fresh 14500 Li-Ion bare battery purchased from 4sevens in my Dorcy 1AA.

I couldn't resist and put it in for a few seconds and it was BRIGHT. I did this on and off for small errants.

Today, I let it in for longer time for about 10 or 15 minutes and it got warm slowly. It didn't get too warm at the end of that time period.

I was prepared if circuit burnt out I could alway direct drive the LED. I don't worry about the LED because it is well sinked.

It is Luxeon R2H that is in the head. Initial current draw 850mA when fully charged. When battery voltage dropped down to 3.7 volt the current draw is about 730mA.

It is my most worthy conversion. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Please don't blame me if you smoke yours. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

Good luck.

so going through a circuit? is that draw from the bat or at the emitter (guessing bat, 'cause hard to do the emitter after it's attached).

I've done some testing with LiONs with DD and it looks very promising.

it works both ways. My Dorcy AA with a LUXIII white runs better in direct drive (i just shorted two contact points in the converter board. With the converter board the LED was getting about 720mA, in direct drive it gets 1200mA peak). The other one with a RBIII in it runs better WITH the converter board (it has a higher operating voltage). I DO like the option of using different batteries tho. and in a worst case, I can put the white head on the body with the converter board, pop in an alky AA, and I am not in the dark.
