Hello Forum.

I had a not-so-funny experience recently, and I need your valued advice on whether this battery is still safe to use or not.

The battery in question is a protected Ultrafire 18650, 3000mAh.

Here is what happened.

I was testing some P60 dropins and I was taking all the usual precautions. I would remove the tailcap, remove the battery, put in the next dropin, put the battery back in, tailcap on, then tested the dropin.

Everything was going fine. I removed the tailcap and the battery would not come out. I've replaced the tailcap, turned on the light and no problems. I then removed the tailcap while the light was still on and light stayed on!

No tailcap, no apparent connection, but still had around 200 lumens of light pumping out the front! I thought to myself, not good.

Tried shaking the battery out and it was definitely not moving.

I've given it a terrific shake and the battery came flying out at last.

What had happened was the spring on the dropin had dropped below the lip where it normally sits and impaled the battery, thereby closing the circuit and the torch stayed on, and the battery would not come out.

The battery ended up with a small scratch, approx half a mm wide and about 3 mm in length near the top of the battery, and the metal was slightly exposed. I pushed and prodded the plastic back into place, and I have put some high-temp tape around it and there seems to be no other damage.

So, is this battery OK to use or should I turf it?

Was it the dropin's outer spring that made contact with the cell's shoulder?

If the plastic is just nicked near the cell's shoulder and the metal isn't compromised then it should be fine. I would reduce the sharpness of the dropin's spring.

If there was a chance that a short occured, the cell needs to be replaced, but based on your description, I don't think it ever shorted.
