Someone else asked me this today...

We are currently seeing about 40% good enough to use in a human application like this. I have seen a slight improvement in quality with what is actually shipped to me. Today I saw a bunch of Q's! Of course, they where 2 tint. Grr. What a waste. We currently don't use anything less than a 3 tint and M flux. That gives us the yields above.

We are also yet to get lumileds to take back a single greenish LED. I now have quite a tall leaning stack of reels waiting for RMA.

Peter,

I would be interested in Q flux LEDs even with 2 tint. I would be especially interested if you can offer these 'rejects' at a price more in line with the cost to you of the stars rather then the 'prime selection' premium.

After waiting forever to get these in and then having to refuse the first shipment because of poor tint, we finally have a small number that are at least M3 rank or better.

These are the 1W HD emitter on a star PCB with solder contacts. You provide the optic, power supply and housing to make your dream light!

Specs:

#LXHL-MW1D
1 Watt
High Dome (Lambertian) pattern
White output
M flux, 3 tint or better (hand sorted)
Binning is factory printed on each part
$18 each, no dealers

Because so few passed the hand sort, we only have a limited number in stock right now. We do not know when we will get more in.

Peter, as you do a pretty good volume of Luxeon purchasing, perhaps you could provide some insight into the relative yield Lumileds is achieving in the various flux bins of M thru Q. Also, over time, have you noted any change [hopefully improvement] in the distribution of the yield into each bin?

Still holding out on that RMA. But, if they absoulutely will not take them back, I will have to sell them off cheap. That would cost me though.

One would think that Lumileds would have better QC.I wish they would separate them and sell the greenies at a discount.I suppose that most people would not want them. It's a shame that they can't get the manufacturing process consistent.

Peter,

I hope that you get the RMA, but if that doesn't work, consider selling the sorted components at a price that makes you a reasonable profit. The more 'precious' ones would go for quite a premium over your cost, and the 'rejects' might go at a onesie price that is equal to your bulk purchase cost (in other words, they would go for what you would get with the RMA, meaning no profit but no loss) and the middling ones (rejects with some desired quality) would go for Future-Active's 'onesie' price, which would make you a small profit.

As I said, I am interested in _bright_ devices even if they are 'greenies', and would pay Future's 'onsie' price for such. I might be interested in dim (flux K or L) Luxeons with good color for mains powered night-lights. Etc.

Alas I am only interested in buying a couple at a time, so it would remain to be seen if there are sufficient others interested in buying your stock of 'rejects'.
