Anyone know of a simple AA LED with a lock-out capable switch? This is for the GF's purse and needs only to be resistant to accidental activation, using common cells.

One vote for the Ultrafire C3 in 1xAA format. Simple single mode- click for on, click for off, nothing fancy, but it's bright. Glass lens will help protect against scratching with keys and junk in the purse.

The switch on my LM31, when using the included GITD switch cap, seems nearly impossible to have an accidental activation. Besides that it has a lockout switch as well!

Re: 1x AA clicky, er...twisty?

Dammit! I meant to say twisty, not clicky.
Anyway, if the twisties can be locked out by loosening the TC
they could be viable candidates. I hadn't thought about that so maybe it's a good thing I mispoke

Although I will look more closely at clickies, does anyone know of a supplier that has product similar to this in AA?
(Yes, that's my review in there!) A single-mode twisty seems the best bet since it would be used rarely and she wouldn't need to remember how to change modes. Not that she isn't smart enough. I hope she's not reading :D

Personally, I have found that a simple clickie is easier for a non-flashaholic to operate than a twistie. Whenever I hand someone a twistie, they never know which way to twist: "do I tighten for on" (most designs), or "do I loosen for on" (like the ever-popular MagLite). This is compounded even more if I hand them a momentary twistie (my poor mother... but it's funny to watch. :shakehead).

I don't think you would run into any trouble with a non-protruding clickie coming on in a purse/pocket. Having a clickie that is also locked out seems like more trouble that it's worth if you're actually carrying it and not simple transporting it.

For GF's purse, Ultrafire C3 is an excellent budget AA light.
It looks great and feels great in hand. Also has good run time.
But make sure to buy the single mode version and not the 5 mode.

It has a rear clicky but it will be extremely difficult to accidently turn it on.
Unless you give it a proper firm click right till the end, it will not turn on.
Pretty much all of my workmates (some girls) do not like twisty switch at all.

But.. If you still want a twisty.. Try the KD AAA buckle light..
It is excellent, small and cute. It's not as rugged as Ultrafire C3 though.
But it's still great. Especially for $15. See my review for beam photos etc.

Oh...I've had a Fenix and an MTE click on in my pocket. That's half of why I got the clicky I linked to above and that's why I wanted a clicky for the girl.
I have since given the MTE away but I'll ask if they can LOTC and I'll mess with my Fenix.
Thanks :)

I carry my rebel 1AA MTE from the DX in my pocket all the time; so far its holding up great. Excellent brightness on fresh NiMH, good on alkalines. But if you plan on running alkies I would go with a cree light such as the C3 above (thats a P4 isnt it?) or the 1 mode enhanced cree (sku 1892 on DX). I've had the 1892 since May and its done everything from rainy bike rides to pocket duty with no problems. Very tough light with 3 hours or so on 1 alkaline AA.

+1 Lumapower LM31 (formerly called a LM301)

I think it's just about perfect for you. It has a clicky Low High Off tailswitch plus a lockout via a head twist. You can leave the light in either Low or High mode and twist on and off. Click off and twist off and you're pretty well covered. Cheap too, relatively speaking ;)

I have both the DX Rebel MTE 100 5-mode and the DX Seoul P4 MTE light (I forget the SKU#s at the moment).

I like the warmer tint and the ease of operation of the Seoul 1-mode MTE the best ... and have a hard time understanding how it could go off in a pocket (some here have complained about the stiff clicky). I suppose if you bend over in tight-ish jeans and have other items in your pockets ... it could go off. This used to happen to my car key fob panic button on my Nissan. :shakehead

In a woman's purse, I think either light would be fine ...

I'll be giving away most of my DX lights this year as Christmas presents ... to women I know: family, co-workers and other associated special lady friends.

The LumaPower LM31 is around double the price of the DX lights mentioned above. I have not had my DX lights long nor have I put them through their paces. Is the Lumapower really better? At first glance, both MTE lights I have are pretty good ... with the Rebels having more variety of tints. I know both brands are Chinese lights.

Hey gearbox - guess we all need to know if your GF picks up a flashlight
like some women pick up a crescent wrench? (ie like picking up a dog turd).

And you know it'll be loaned out to a gal-pal for some use and never returned
if its a pretty flashlight. So why not just a little keychain led light?
OK, we know its about throw. Spotting lurkers in the dark parking lot, etc.

Might I suggest Rayovac 1AA: could tell her the red and blue are for checking her makeup
and the white is general use. Its small (don't tell her its cheap) and can lock it as shown.
And its got an obvious button to push! Connect to her keys for availability.

I gave my GF a 1xAA 1W RiverRock luxeon ($23 at Target) and she actually does carry it in her purse and uses it! :twothumbs
I don't think there's much chance of that clickie coming on accidently.

If you're interested in buying American the Peak Pacific is available with an AA sized body. It has a twisty switch (tighten the head). I have the older Luxeon version and it's plenty bright. The new Seoul powered ones are even better.
Just my 2¢
