I need one such LED light to give as a present to a friend. She's easily confused by technology, so I can't give her one of my multimode lights or she'd hate it; at the same time, I don't want to give her a single-mode, because she might need low power sometimes.
What I need is a two-mode. I'd get a Fenix L1D, but it's way too expensive to give away; however, of the AA lights I've seen on DX and KD none are just two mode.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I'm currently working on a single AA light with an extension tube to use as 2 x AA. It handles input voltage of 0.8 to 4.2V, so pretty much regular AA, NIMH, 14500 all going to work. It will be 3 modes, not 2 modes though. Hopefully I can get it next month with L-Mini II.

Eagletacs are nice and they're a simple 2 mode. PTS has both the 1xAA and 2xAA models.

Lm31 is like 28 or 29 bucks and is 2 modes and supposed to be very good. I also highly recommend the CJ-1W from golden gadgets. It is only 5 bucks and it is a really nice 1xAA light. 3hr battery life, 50 lumens, good tint, nice build. It is the main light I use around the house, it has a impressive beam for a cheapo light and I find 50 lumens is a very nice level.

As long as it doesn't have strobe or SOS, 3-mode is perfectly OK. Waiting with impatience :)

Dunno if they ship here, but it's irrelevant - I can't give her a CR123 light. As far as she's concerned, batteries are just little sticks of energy that you insert in things; if I told her her new light uses cells that she has to order online and care about lest they blow up or release toxic gases, she'd have me interned :p

Though it's not two-mode, Akoray Cree Q5-WC 6-Mode Memory Flashlight with Clip (1*AA/1*14500) in DX is a nice-looking flashlight and its building quality can rival Jetbeam, but is priced at humble $22.38.

The many modes make it a bad choice in my case.
I've perused the DX search extensively; had I been able to find what I'm looking for there, I wouldn't have asked here. ;)

It seems AKOray K-106 (AA/14500) has several versions. A user of AKOray K-106 claimed "my unit is 3 modes instead of the 6 modes advertised" in the Reviews of AKOray K-106.
I also own an AKOray K-106 with three modes that are programmable (similar to the IBS of Jetbeam) .
The 3 modes version of AKOray K-106 is at least close to the targeted 2 modes. :naughty:
Maybe you can corfirm with DX for the number of modes before place an order.

Just for fun :D

I do like this Akoray very much. It is a 3 mode, user programmable to what ever you want. The program mode isn't likely to be stumbled upon by a casual user as it takes 6 clicks to enter (that's a good thing) you can pre-program it for her and she never needs to know it is programmable for simplicities sake. It also has memory.

So, if you didn't want lo-med-hi, you could simply duplicate one of the modes, and for all intents and purposes, it would act as a 2 mode. Make it med-high-med and it will pretty much seem a 2 mode, except if skipping through the modes it would go med-high-med-med-high-med-med-high-med etc. I did notice you have to hold the half press down a hair longer than some other lights. A very quick tap won't change modes on mine, you have to hold it for ~.5-1 second.
