34. Will my rechargeable 123s work with DB/BB converters? 2004-10-02 13:31:49

The way to determine if a BB or DB will work with rechargeable 123s all lies in the voltage.

To be continued...

Thanks KevinL
I buying a BB600/TWOK
So the Vf for "K" = 3.51V - 3.75V

Does that means that a 1XR123 4.2Volt batt will blow the LED? as the 4.2 volts is greater than the Vf?

The website that you had shown me states that
----------------------------------------------------
For your BB, its job is to raise the voltage to the Vf required by the LED - in the case of a 5W LED, its Vf can be taken to be around 6.5-7V. If you supply the converter with an input voltage HIGHER than the Vf of the LED, the converter goes into direct drive and may cook the LED. Thus you should always feed it less volts than the Vf of the LED.

2 x 4.2V = 8.4V, too much. 1 x 4.2V should work, you will need a dummy spacer to take the place of one of the 123 cells
-------------------------------------------
According to the last sentence it states that 1x4.2V should work.
Does that means that 4.2V will still light up the LED but in a direct drive and may blow the led in the long run?

Please advice

Thanks

Personally my recommendation would be to use an L bin. L bins are close enough to 4.0V, plus some converter losses, and should be safe. I have tested a L-bin sandwich with an R123 and it works ok.

As for K bin, they tell me it should be ok, but I have no idea since I don't have any K bin Luxeons any longer. It's a risk that's up to you.

BB600/TWOK should be fine on the li-ion cell. 4.2v is the voltage right off of the charger. The nominal voltage is about 3.7v. There are losses in the converter and the battery will sag a bit under load.

I'm technologically dumb. So circuits have no voltage limits? Only the LED?
