does anybody make a rechargeable battery that will fit in place of 2 lithium 123. i'm thinking of buying a surefire L4 but don't like the idea of going broke buying batteries. please help with any suggestions /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/broke.gif

Pila Li-Ion. They make a cell that fits in the space of 2x123's. I use this in my L4. I highly recommend the Li-Ion's with the L4. The same cell also runs the KL1, and KL3 in the 2 cell bodies. They're available from www.1esa.com

Hi. CM

I'd like to know the difference of brightness.
About a half bright? 6V vs 3.7V

For the L4 you want the Pila 168S 1400mAH. The 168A will NOT fit. It is too fat.

Brightness difference using Pila in Surefire L4?

Just changing the title to reflect Shin's question, coz I'd like to know too!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Run time on the 168s is about an hour. I have one in my G2z. It works great. Thinking of getting another for my G2

Maybe Surefire should make a rechargeable L4.

Re: Brightness difference using Pila in Surefire L

Sorry guys, haven't visited this topic in a while and missed the questions directed at me.

Shin, branny, the good news is that there is no brightness difference. That's the huge advantage of boost regulated lights, especially 5W because the regulator can get enough power from the Li-Ion cell to drive the LED into full regulation. My two L4's draw approximately 1.3A from a 1.5AH 17670 size Li-Ion. If I use it intermittently, which is how I use lights most of the time, I expect to get close to an hour of run-time before the cell needs to be recharged. Regardless, I always top off my Li-Ions when it is practical since I don't want to risk overdischarging them.

Just a note about the Pila rechargeables. You don't have to worry about over discharging them like you do with bare li-ions. The Pilas have a protection circuit built in and the battery will shut down before over discharge.

Re: Brightness difference using Pila in Surefire L

That's a good point. For those not inclined to be watchdogging the batteries, the Pila's are great. I have them, but they're kinda spendy so I'm trying out the bare ones. But on the L4, the light will tell you when to charge them.

Re: Brightness difference using Pila in Surefire L

The Pila cells are great if you don't mind spending the money on them. That protection circuit comes with a very high premium, though. I've been using the bare Li-Ions in my L4 for a little while now and haven't had any issues whatsoever with them. My L4 drops out of regulation long before the batts. are overdischarged (around 2.9V). It really couldn't be simpler, when the L4 does dim, I charge the battery. I did forget about it one time during a run-time test and the cell had gone down to 2.62V. I let it cool off, put in on the charger, and 45 min. later it was back at 4.15V with no obvious ill effects.

Man, I just love my rechargeable L4!

Peter,

Run time test? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif What kind of run time are you getting? Those are the same 17670's we got in highlandsun's group buy, I'm assuming. Sorry for asking, I'm too easily distracted to do a run time. I have young kids and my focus tends to be whatever their attention span is leading them into trouble.
