the second one looks cheaper with more light. also any idea what kind of runtimes i could see with both flashlights on akaline or energizer e2 lithium batteries?

Personally I would go with option 2 and use rechargeable AA, but keep in mind either option is too bright for any upclose work. Unless you are doing things like look into dark corner of engine bay in day time, then it's fine.

define upclose, meaning less than 2'?

i am in pest control so i do a lot of looking under stoves, behind refrigerators, in closets, attics, crawls spaces, etc. so bright is good. but i would like some good run time, i dont want to have to carry a case of batteries in my truck.

If you are using them in daytime then they should work fine.
