Guys,

I've got a 2C and 4D mag light that I found when digging through my old closet at my parent's house. I'd like to bring thing back to life. Idealy, I would like to find a simple drop in that could just simply pop in with little or no effort. If something like that isn't available, I could do a mod, but I'm a newby with very little time on my hands right now.

Any help or suggestions?

thanks,
Chris

I love the Malkoff dropins I put in my dad's old Maglites (2Cs). (http://www.malkoffdevices.com/shop/2c-cell-dropin-to-fit-maglite-p-4.html , and http://www.malkoffdevices.com/shop/dropin-module-for-36-dcell-to-fit-maglite-p-1.html I suppose!)

Depending on just how old the ones you found are there may or may not be simple dropins available. Most dropins today are made for incandescent Maglites with serial numbers that start with a C or a D respectively. If you have a MagLED you're usually out of luck, and if you have a very old Maglite with no letters in the serial number it's more finicky.

In my case I had to use a copper sleeve from Britelumens (http://www.britelumens.com/emittersandparts.html) to fit the Malkoff units that were meant for newer 2Cs with the C in the SN. It wasn't any more difficult, just one more part to source (and worst of all wait for:().

Thanks, I'll take a look at the malkoff's.

The 2C does not have a C in the serial#, but the 4D does have a D in it's serial number.

I have an older Malkoff drop in for my non D serial number 3D Maglight. I am happy with it. I bought it when the new style wasn't out, or prevalent (dont' know which).

Very simple to install, and I would recommend getting one when they are in stock. If you sign up for notifications, you get an e-mail when the item is in stock. Move fast, as they sell out quickly.

TerraLUX do some okay dropins for newbies like me if you have a tighter budget, like most other dropins they require minimal effort to install.
However iv'e read the malkovs beat them by a long shot for durability.

I'm kinda like you.. new and have two mags.. a 4D and 6D. I just put a terrraLux into the 4D and have a Malkoff ordered for the 6D. I can't wait to see what happens. As of now I'm pleased with the TerraLux at 140 lumens for the truck light.

Thanks for the links and opinions. I have some old 3 D-cell Mags that I would like to upgrade.

The Dorcy 41-1644 40 Lumen 4.5V - 6V LED Replacement Bulb I mentioned earlier (spot/spill) and the budget showerhead (big blob of light) would work in a 3D.
The Terralux TLE-1F is not brighter than the Dorcy bulb at 4X the cost. The Terralux 6EXB is a bit brighter at 5X the cost. (The Terralux should last longer than the Dorcy if you use your flashlight a lot.)

With a 3D Mag the voltage from 3 NiMH batteries is just right for direct driving a powerful LED like the SSC-P7.

This mod will give you a light that only the $400+ SST-90 lights can beat.

Also take a look at the incandescent flashlight forum. You can put together some very bright hotwires.

For the 4D, take a look at the "Budget showerhead" thread...
