3 watt 3 times brighter than an Everled?

I've been planning on building this light for a while now - 3D Mag with lithium ion's, hot lips, and a 3 watt Luxeon. Right now I've got a 3D with an Everled in it as my main light. I'm really happy with the light output, would it be safe to say that my mod with a 3 watt will be 3 times as bright? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I really shouldn't be spending this much on flashlights right now...oh well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

While we're talking about it, anybody need a white Everled to help me finance this project? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
 
If cost is a factor why don't you go direct drive from 3 D cells. Skip the Lithium Ions. They must be expensive. Lux3 on a hotlips heat sink. I have this arrangement using a TWOK lux3. It is overdriven, however I'm told at safe levels. The Hotlips is very good about keeping things cool. So far mine has had no problems. I don't expect any. Very simple mod. Yet effective.

Fired up my Everled in a military anglehead, and my 3 watt luxeon in a Elektrolumens Blaster III. Tested with my LM631 lightmeter in dark bathroom for overall light. Everled reads 2.6, and Blaster 10.2. Everled is pulling .430amps, and Blaster .999amps.

Up till now I've been using alkalines. Never did a run time test run. However they do seem to last a long time. As good or better than the original incan. For a cheaper rechargeable could go to NiMH. I just did some math on using NiMH and a resistor might be in order. I could very well have this all wrong. I measured the current draw with alkalines and came up with 1.3A at 3.3V The 3.3 volt is a result of the high internal resistance of the alkalines. That works out to aproximately 4.29 watts. If I were to use NiMH the internal resistance is much less thus there would be very little voltage drop. 3.6V of the NiMH would likely stay close to that with load. 3.6 vs 3.3 a difference of .2 volt. .2 volt creates an extra aprox. 200ma at the led. So using the above numbers.
1.3A + 200ma = 1.5A
1.5A x 3.6V = 5.40W NiMH

1.3A 3.3V = 4.29W alkaline

Conclusion 5.4W might be a little high for a Lux3. But then maybe the hotlips will save the day. It is one hell of heat sink. I just don't know what the outcome will be.

Somebody please correct me if I have this wrong.

I thought about using NiMh, but after the cost of 3 batteries, and a D charger, it wouldn't be much more to hack some lithium packs. And with the lithiums, I won't have to worry about discharging the batteries too low, because it will have it's own protection circuit. I think what I'm going to do is build it for 3D's, and then later on I'll ad a regulation circuit and some lithiums.
 
If you go with lithiums, it seems silly to put them in a huge 3d, especially when you could be making a light that is pocketable.

Anything "pocketable" won't have the throw of a mag. In a 3D I can stuff alot of mah, also it's the light I keep in my truck so I like it's usefullness as a weapon. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sssh.gif
