I'm planning on modding a Maglite with a current regulated XM-L drawing 3 amps. The host will be a 3D Maglite.

What are some recommended battery configurations? I was thinking Li-ion or NiMH.

I was planning on three 26650 LiMnNi cells. Would three D or four C NiMH, in a sleeve, handle it well?

Thank you

3amps is not much of a current, almost any rechargable cells will handle that.

What kind of driver circuit do you prefer? Buck for the 3 li-ions or maybe a AMC7135 linear regulator for the nimh route? I would decide on a power source first before choosing the driver.

I've made a few simple Maglite builds using XM-Ls and LM317T regulators, adding a resistor to get the desired current. The LM317T has a 1.5A limit, so I was going to go a similar route with one of its bigger brothers that can handle 3A.

Though, after looking into these drivers you mentioned I think I need to do some more homework. :ooo:

If you are looking for a cheaper driver you could try the dealextreme driver. In the DX search box type in 57779. There is also some modding you can do in this thread.

If you take the Shark Buck route with external log pot for infinite brightness adjustment, see this 2D Mag mod build for some guidance on how to do the mod. The external pot connection to the Shark Buck should be the same as for the Blue Shark.

I've decided to go with an AMC7135 driver (2.8A) and four C NiMH.

I'm looking into Li-ion for future builds.

Thanks for the suggestions.
