4/3 A batteries.

I was at thew local batteires plus the other day trying to
get a 3500 mah 1/2 d battery pack for my mag 60. I had waited two weeks for it only to be told they could only get 2500 mah (so I am still looking). While I was there I saw some 4/3 A cells. They had a 4000 mah rating and the clerk said 4500 mah were available. Three in a triangle configuration would no quite fit in my magcharger. Some clearence could be gained by removing some of the heatshrink off the cells and turning it into a pack. If not slight honing to the inside could be done. A pack of six would need a spacer as they are shorter than the 5 1/2 d's.
Sonds like a good setup for a mag 11 or 74 conversion. Long run time and lighter weight make it sound real appealing.
You could even use a 1/2 d lenthener and probably turn it into a mag 85 with an hour run time. Two questions why has not anybody used the A's in mods? Would a mcacharger modified with Shrums modificatio be able to chare a 7.2 or 10.8 4000 0r 4500 mah pack?? thanks

Using stacked triple A cells and then boring the body is how Ginseng built the Aurora.

The problem is that in order to get them in there, you have to bore the body so large that you lose the tail cap threads.

That means that you then have to find a pretty ingenious way to keep the tailcap on, which he did, but has told me it won't work for a production run.

This was one of the major hangups that caused the Aurora production run to be cancelled, as boring the bodies just wasn't cost effective, especially when you then had to build a new end cap retaining system.

I am not a machinist but I thought that it you more or less machined 3 troughs (indentations) just were the batteries touched the mag body it would allow the largest part of the thread to remain. If you could use the standard charger it would not have to removed on a regular basis. It would kind of look like the rotating breech on a cannon. WOW I am shocked I came up with an idea that one of the master modders had used as I am very much the student in this regard.

Great idea, very tough to make happen for a reasonable cost unless you have a good friend who is a machinest.

Nobody I have talked to thinks you can do it without going through quite a few bodies to get the machinery dialed in.

Cost just became the issue for me. It was actually simpler to design a slightly larger body and have it made than to do it this way.

It is possible but as Bill said, cost of making larger body will be even less.

five mega are those the 3800, 4000 or 4500. I was xhecking and some of the batteries are 17mm and some are 18 mm. Loosing that and then then removing the shrink wrap turning it into a battery packmight save a little more.

I think he is also trying to show you length there. Notice that there is NO threading at past closer to you than the ends of the cells?

A cells are 17mm in diameter and when I built the Aurora packs, I replaced their shrink and then used another layer of shrink on top to bind the pack. This puts it right at the limit of what will fit in a bored out D Mag. In this case, the threads were obliterated. And it was costly to do. The cells must be insulated so you really can't use them bare, without wrap of any sort.

Fat-A's are 18mm in diameter and will not fit as a triple stack, wrapped pack in a D-body.

I have used 4000mAh PowerSonic. 4500mAh version has 18mm diameter and even stack of two won't fit in D M*g without reboaring.
I did not use lathe for boaring. The only solution is milling machine to cut three slots so part of threads will remain untouched which will be good enough to hold end cap.

I have done same way to accomodate 12AA in 3D or 2x18650 on shortened M*g #2

Fivemega that is exactly what I had in mind. Is that photo of a maglight? I know it is not a magcharger. Would one of your half d spacers allow a third set of A'a and how much are they? Thanks

Yes, it is a M*g D
Extension tubes that I made has tiny wall of male threads. Now if you want to cut 3 slots on it, remaining part will be too weak to hold pressure of spring and will be risky.
Why do you want to go through these? Machining body plus extender? Only to accomodate 7.2 volt at 4000mAh?
Why don't you try my way? 12AA 7.2 volt at 4000mAh without machining in 3D or MC. No extender needed. Like this .

I was toying with the idea of making MC85... getting power hungry I guess. No I will stick with the 7.4 volt with probably an 1111. That away I can have a bright light with an hour run time. I want to use the stock charger that is modded. thanks. This is probably the only time you will miss a sale. I want to buy almost all your products..... thanks
