I was playing with my 5 watt luxeon mod last night (with 30mm optic), and though it's plenty bright, it is only marginally brighter than my 1 watt with 30mm optic and obviously not as bright as my Legend LX, or a 5 C celled incandescent bulbed flashlight. I know that you can get a bright spot using a reflector, but for overall brightness, can these 5 watt LEDs compare to these brigher incans? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My Space Needle, Space Needle 2, and NexNeedle (all 5 watt Luxeon Star mod's) are way brighter than my Legend LX and My Modified Legend LX with the SureFire P61 HOLA in there.

Did you measure voltage / current - what power source are you using ?

Well, then I must have done something wrong, or the voltage to my 5 watt is low because my Legend LX is brighter. I wish I had the money for a Space Needle II (which there aren't any out there for sale at the moment anyway). Plus, my significant other would be mad at me if I spent another $100 + for another flashlight "that I don't need". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

I may have to get another 5 watt and try to make a mod using the reflector rather than the 30mm optic. I don't believe that the 30mm optic works that well with the 5 watt. It works great with the 1 watt, but seems to loose light with optics.

Yep. The Space Needle I have blows out my Legend LX and E2. The SN is based on a U3U 5W LS, though. People with the W2 SNII have it even brighter. My SN is seriously challenging my UltraStinger in half-charged batt mode. And it beats out my PT Surge.

It's some serious light output. The U2U's probably around at least 125 lumens.

Well,

I went and took a look at a few of my lights. Here's the order in terms of output, to the eye, non-instrumented. Brightest to dimmest. Relative brightness in the first column. Those numbers are SWAG'ged. Also, keep in mind that in a dark room or outside at night on a moonless night, the whiteness of the 5W LED makes things pop out, increasing the visual impact. In that case, the ab Mag mod goes up to 9.5 relative.

10 SF 9P with P91 lamp
8.5 ab Mag 2D 5W
8.0 SF 9P with P90 lamp
7.0 Illuminator Ad-Pro 1W
4.0 Opalec Newbeam

Wow! A 5W LS more brighter than an M6 (on LOLA)!

My home made KL-4 (V3-BB750) on my E2e seems a lot brighter (and whiter)(And it gets a whole lot hotter /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) than my 6P.

well, of course the 249 is unreflectorized...but when you overdrive it... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
