5mm led at 22000 mcd?

Candle Power Forums

Help Support Candle Power:

I wonder if the 22000 figure is at the maximum 75ma peak current or the max forward current of 30ma. I find it odd they don't list a normal current rating instead use maximum current ratings.

I purchased some time ago a bunch of 21000mcd 5mm led and I must say that they put a very decent amount of light for a 5mm, you don't need lenses or reflectors .

Here is a photo of one of these leds (right) against an ARC AAA LE (left):

I don't know if this is the same or not, but I recently bought some of these (white ones at bottom of list). I stuck one in a Minimag in place of the standard bulb and it's brighter than an Opalec Newbeam. It has a greenish tint of about the same intensity as the blue tint of a Nichia.

Either it's at 20 mA or those are no great bargain. Regular 8000 mcd LEDs can get 22,000 mcd running at 75 mA. Also note that since the maximum forward current is 30 mA these are standard 5mm LEDs. Standard 5mm LEDs almost always have their optical specs at 20 mA. Given the premium these cost compared to other white LEDs on eBay, I have little doubt that the 22,000 mcd brightness is at 20 mA, which coupled with the beam angle gives these a fairly high 40 lm/W or so efficiency.

Thank you all for the input.

I wish BestHongKong and other makers can send some samples to LED Museum for testing.

I saw BestHongKong has 5mm led with 20000 mcd rating on the eBay but not on his website. The brightest 5mm led on his website is 14000 mcd at 20mA.

I wish there are comparison pictures like Pablo's between different ratings of 5mm led at 20mA so we are talking the same thing.

iirc the high power leds have 2 or 4 dies so running them at 20ma is a waste.

Pablo - do you remember where you bought those, or what/who exactly those led's are?? I'd like to find a few to play with. Thanks.
