...by my good ol' buddy McGizmo. He was wondering how the Pelican M6's rather deep and dimpled reflector would take to a 5-watt HD mod so we made arrangements:

You might be wondering what that black girdle thingy is, and it's a Delrin collar machined to fit snugly between the body and tailcap (where there's a circumferential recess to hold it motionless). On it is attached the male end of a cellular phone beltclip mount. The clip clamps over one's belt and the light can now be popped in, to swing freely in head-down position, easily released by pressing in a button on the clip while simultanesouly pulling the light up and out. Better yet for those moments requiring a brief blast of light, one can simply swing the light up into horizontal position while still attached, press quickly on the tailcap to emit the needed photonic burst, and simply released to swing back down into the hang-carry position. Don also made one for my McLux:

Using a 5W white HD and dat2zip's BB750, Don fabricated a screw-in Pill that emulates the Pelican's stock piece exactly, in order to perfectly replace the original assembly (even check the grippy knurling!):

This next shot displays the perfectly centered Luxeon, you can see the emitter's yellow phosphor glinting out from the stock Pelican's mottled reflector:

So as usual I put it up against some well-known competition, from left to right they are:

1) Don's own infamous 5W emitter in SF E2 w/E2C adapter, BB750, SF Turbohead, and -- CLICKIE switch(!) which he recently sold me

2) Lambda Adrenalin Pro

3) Arc LSH-P w/2AA TSP

4) SF E2 w/KL1

A beamshot with lights on the floor (hey, I only have two hands) in the same order:

Notice that the Turbohead 5W casts a much more tightly focused spot, while the Pel/M6 5W produces a medium-tight, very useful flood pattern that was still able to easily cast its beam out onto trees 75 yards away and beyond.

And brightness? How about 1,441 lux?

Please do not e-mail me, this PM6/5W gem is not for sale. Instead, contact McGizmo! (Heh heh, sorry Don ol' bud, but you asked for it with such a quality mod...)

Oh, Wow! And here, I just passed a few questions/requests onto Don...

Looks like a smooth, overflowing beam...

Uh thanks Charlie! I think. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I've recently been getting quite a few requests for mods but I am regretfully turning them down. I have put out some feelers for getting the module for the PM6 made as it is the part that consumes some time. If I could get the modules, then I would consider doing some mods as well as geting these out as DIY components. I really do think the PM6 is a reasonably friendly host and has the mass and room to allow for modification. The reflector is very nice.

YC,
You and Falcon FX and the SE's! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif The reflector surprised me with the HD so it may even be friendly with a 5W SE. Who knows. Might have to mount one this weekend and have a look see paired with the reflector.

Oh yeah!

I'm actually quite interested in checking out whether this guy's good to go with an SE as well... The reflector looks deep enough, that even when cut at the bottom, it should still have enough height and side for a good broad throw...

Imagine a pre-KL4...

Very nice work! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif

I gotta believe that a kit or ready-to-go drop-in for the affordable M6 would surely be a hot seller. I'm interested...

That looks like a very useful beam pattern for my needs.

John

I would also like to see a pre-assembled 5W kit w/clickie & improved lens for the M6.

I've been looking to get a 5W mod myself. If this drop-in isn't too expensive...

Steve,

What are you looking at spending? Since you live right here on the island...

Charlie,

I don't know. Probably between $100-$200. More if the situation warrants. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

[EDIT] - Gee, you take long entering a post.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/poke2.gif

Anatomy of the mod:

Ok, let's look at the likely cost of this light.

Parts:
PM6 - $40
5W LED - $28 ?
BB 700 - $22
Al LED Module - ??
anode isolator - ??
anode contact - ??
thrust washer for module/ spring (needed for smooth adjustment of beam focus; not critical)
Arctic Silver epoxy or equivalant
Electrically Conductive epoxy for ground (if module is EN plated, lead can be soldered to it)
Glass lens - ?

Labor required:

solder leads to converter board
mount LED to module
install converter board
install and connect anode isolator and anode contact
* remove bottom step shoulder from reflector

As you can see, there are quite a few missing parts to the puzzle here but realistically, I would expect a DIY to be in the neighborhood of $125 to $150 and a completed mod to be in the neighborhood of $150 to $185

* the requirement of removing the final step or shoulder of the reflector is the only glitch in this being a complete drop in module. With a lathe, this modification is very quick and straight forward. The shoulder can also be milled, ground or filed off.

I have sent out some drawings of the module for quote with the intent of potentially having the components available from Wayne Y. If this doesn't pan out, then I will provide the design specifics to interested parties for a nominal fee. (think second mortgage or refinance of home /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif ) Just joking.

As with any mod, there is no great economy of scale here and it is likely that commercially available product will be lower in price or certainly close when they come out (5W). I think that the mass and size of this light coupled with the compatibility of the reflector will make this mod a legitimate contender with commercially available products. When Wayne gets his wizards or step down converter drivers going, this platform can be used for 1 Watt LED's and will yield a light that doesn't have any comparables available from the flashlight manufacturers.

Just some info to mull over.....

Other than centering, are you attempting to position the emitter along the reflector axis for any particular beam objective, such as optimal throw?
