5W on MicroPuck

I got bored. Soldered a MicroPuck to a U3T, and tried a 123. Was annoying to look at. Clipped/stripped and measured 160 mA diode current. Tried 6V in (kinda hard to hold the 2 123s /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) and got 410 mA, and residual spots. Possibilities?

At 6 volts in , your MicroPuck will have a rather short life. I've gotten awy with 4.5VDC, with no ill effects, but then it was a short term test.

But as they say, no pain, no gain, it's worth a try.

The micropuck is driven by a Zetex310 chip. 8 volts is the maximum input voltage of the chip. I don't know if the other parts of the curcuit will survive.

MicroPuck is designed for 1W LS, the output capacitor may be only 4V-rated. Be careful when using it with 5W LS's...

Or try one of the power pucks runs on 12 volts drives a 5W LS

An un-loaded MicroPuck will generate about 28 VDC, with 3V in I tried it for a few seconds only, in order to not fry any capacitors tht may be in the circuit.

The PowerPuck is about 2X the cost of a Micro and is a lot beefire (and larger). Not really intended for maglite conversions, but OK for automotive, lantern and BIG flashlite use. They're happy with 12V in, and also on a 7.4V - 10.8V
LiIon battery pack.

Yipes! Isn't that scary high for the *trasistor*? That is isn't Vceo (maximum collector/emitter voltage not driven) something like 16 Volts? The common result of exceeding this is catastrophic failure without warning........

Hey, when it comes to 'what works' I have a policy to not argue with the chap with experience......

If you did it, it must be possible, right? Just kinda scary.

FWIW, I'm not sure anybody really makes much, 'repackaging' is afterall a relative term.

That's why I tried it for only a few seconds, figured it woud be hazardous to the uPuck's lifespan /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/twak.gif
And the unit that was thusly tested was one retrieved from a failed mod (the circuit worked, the flashlight was cheap plastic and didn't hold up very well). It is now happily serving inside a modded Brinkmann Rebel.

I suppose that 5mm LEDs could be wired in a series-parallel
array, but all I've tried is 16-20 on parallel. A single Luxeon is still brighter, but then I had a lot of NSPG500Bs to play with.
