My many 6 volt lantern type flashlights put out quite a beam, but I can find no info on lumens, cp or anything. Does anybody know how they compare to the ultrastinger. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif

It's going to vary depending on the brand. Who made it?
I've seen one that put out an intense spot. I was impressed by how far it threw it's beam. Not useful at close range, but for seeing something in the distance it was fantastic. I might have out thrown my magcharger, but the beam was much tighter, and the hotspot much smaller. There was no side spill to speak of at all.

Your description describes my Brinkmann M3 exactly. Its a good spotlight if you know exactly where you want to look. My US puts out a fuller bodied beam at long distances and is good for searching. (FWIW: the US is also 6 volts)

also i'd think it would have to do with what bulb you are using. 6 volt lanterns are good for that cause they accept pr based bulbs. And the best thing is that they are cheap! i picked one up a month ago at my local canadian tire for a garrity i-beam 6volt lantern with battery for a mere $5 cdn! was on sale then i went to radio shack and picked up a xenon 4.8v .8mah bulb and that sucker went really bright! I kept a 4.8v .5mah halogen as a low consumption alternative in the spare bulb compartment. i'm taking with me on my next car camping trip. Don't forget to get that 4D cell battery jig for lanterns to give you more flexibility when you need it. And yeah the beam would be very narrow but the distance it throws is amazing, no side spill but the whatever bit that spills out the sides would be still enough to see the ground you are walking on.

man i love both my 6 volt lanterns! they the same lantern except i put a faceted reflector in one.

the smooth reflector one has a PT40 bulb in it and man! can it throw!!!!!!! i was playing with it last night and i was lighting up the side of a house about 100 yds away, and that was through about half a dozen street lamps!(d@mn ambient lighting /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif)

Pardon my ignorance, but what 4D cell battery jig, and where do I get one? That's a great thing to have, and unfortunately I'd never heard of it until now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif

Here's a crazy idea: What about modding a 6V lantern to contain both a high-powered bulb for long throw, AND a 1W LED for close-range floodlighting? Then take it a step further to allow bulb, LED, or both to be on at once. Seems like this would be a useful light indeed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

you need to go to Wal-Mart and see if you can find one of the older "Value-Bright" lanterns by Rayovac. they came witha faceted reflector.

The Battery jig i'm talking about is made by Garrity, i'm not sure if they still make them anymore you might find them in your local hardware stores for around $5 cdn. The Jig is the size of a 6volt battery that allows you to put in 4D cells and since it's smaller the bottom on the thing has a mini storage compartment enough for first aid or extra bulbs or money, whatever you want to put which makes it very useful! can someone post a picture up of this jig? cause that might explain to everyone better than my words can.
