Actually Cree has informed me that they designed them *specifically* for architectural/display applications. Note the flatter dome shape for wider light dispersion.
Also we must remember that LED mfrs. will cater to the largest potential market, which isn't flashlights unfortunately - again it is architectural and probably automotive marking lights that they would like capture. Yet the automotive headlight is not a really viable possibility until cooling issues for something so necessarily bright are solved.
We are presently simply enjoying the benefits of a perfect-fitting application for the more pinpoint beam characteristics of the Luxeon.
I am sticking with Lumileds for now.
