Please join with me brothers for a moment of silence. A true champion has fallen, and a little respect is due to the poor fellow.

He started out as a WA1185, and was soon after potted in a PR base.

Known to be the brightest mod around, he only wanted to test his limits. Nine 1800 Nimh rested a few hours, no problem, just the normal heat.

Nine 2300's rested for a day, a tad warmer, but just another day at the office.

He heard the warnings, 9 2300's are too much, pushing the envelope is not even close. It is more like, *insta-flash*.

But he took on the rested nine, and glowed brightly like the noon-day sun. Isn't this enough to prove his valor?

No, no, never enough! He wanted it all. Nine 2300's hot off the charger. Each hideous cell screaming with over 1.45 volts of red hot madness.

With a small hesitation he heard the click. But wait, look at him shine! Brighter than all get out! Good gravy, he could see the angels surrounding him in such brightness.

And then, *POP*. Our valient soldier had fallen. With the sound of shattering glass, smoke, torn aluminum, and scratched UCL, he gave his life.

So, my brothers in light. Give our fallen comrade a moment of silence. Learn from his sacrifice. +12.9 volts is just too much. Listen to the masters and stay within the listed bounds. Walking near the sun is suicide.

Thanks for you time, and ummm, anyone got another potted WA1185 for sale? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow,

Sad but well written story. You are the third known case of WA01185 explosion. I can now proudly welcome you to the inner circle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In my experience, this is uncommon. I've lit '1185s on 9 cells hot off the charger with no problems. Still, it's a sad day. All I can say is...buy an MC slug and a bunch of bare pin WA01185s. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

RIP little guy, but please know your sacrifice is not in vain. I have my own little 1185 on the way and no longer have to wonder what 9 hot 2300's will do. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That is sad.

I hope that in his short but brilliant life he saw the evening's sky. I would like to think that at least some of his essense escaped the surly bonds of earth and is yet still traversing the universe at 186,000,000 mps to its' celestial appointments.

That a teach the little stiff to mess around with us volts... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've lit my '85 two or three times off cells fresh from the charger using the Ginseng Approved(tm) Sanyo 2100mAH NiMH. What cells were you using? Perhaps I should avoid doing this.

Regardless it was a heck of a way to go, while holding back the frontier for all of us looking for the absolute maximum light in a handheld formfactor /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif It will not have been in vain! Now join the GB /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

MURDERER!!! You kept pushing and pushing until he couldn't take it anymore. You drove the poor little WA1185 to his death. How can you live with yourself?!?! You're a MONSTER! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

MoMag85 is next right? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Your story reminds me of my first 1185. I was so impressed by him, flaring like the sun, casting an almost oppressive glare as he reflected off the ceilings of dim rooms. Lots of little 2- or 3-second tests, just to say WOW. I couldn't wait to get him to some high-quality darkness.
Then he got to shine in the true Ohio darkness at Thanksgiving time, blazing across a field. He was adopted by my 11-year-old nephew, who then used him as a walking light to pick his way back to my parents' house. Until...it all came to an abrupt end. Then, the glorious 85 was nothing more than a white powder coating covering my PMR.
Oh 1185, we hardly knew ye.

Facts of the demise:

9 Energizer 2300 nimh, hot off the charger. +1.4v per cell, and hot to hold

Complete explosion, NO glass evelope remained. Glass bits in the lamp pedestal and surrounding housing.

Fivemega LOP reflector damaged (scratches and pits)

Flashlightlens 52.1 borofloat lens scratched and pitted

White powder residue on lens and reflector.

The killing field has been swept clean.

Your condolences are sincerely appreciated!

This is serious damage, considering the fact that metal reflectors and potted WA bulbs are hard to come by.

I have no problems turning it on with 9AA after fresh charge, mine are GP2100s.
