I just bought this knurler form LittleMachineShop together with some extra wheels - fine diamond and coarse diamond. I have read this tutorial. What I understand is, that you have to knurl on a rod with a diameter that is a multiplum of the knurl wheel tpi. But to do that both wheels must have the same tpi, and I have just been counting the teeth’s on wheels and done triple checking. The wheel doesn’t have the same number of teeth. Fine have 73/76, medium is 49/50 and coarse is 32/33. I have only tried to knurl with the medium ones, but whenever I find the right rod size so one of the wheels track, the other doesn't. There should be the same number of teeth’s on both wheels, right?

Interesting problem. I purchase my knurls as 'sets' and have never counted. But until someone says something different, I believe that both must have the same number of teeth.

Two things help me with tracking. Apply lots of pressure right away on a test piece set to your diameter. One needs to get the knurls 'stuck in' right away.
If they do not look right, stop and reduce the diameter a few thou and test again.

I was taught to 'get on with it'
Don't linger as you do not want to go over the same area too long.

Come in hard and get the power traverse on asap.

I purchased this one and never counted threads, I just put the knurlers on the maximum diameter, press a little, turn by hand back and forth a couple of times, then engage the lathe at low speed hight torque and slowly move across the area to be knurled.

I purchased a cut-knurling tool from Dorian. It cost a fortune, has to be set-up juuust right, is supposed to be run at normal cutting speeds, but very fast feeds. (Scary!) It does do a nice knurl and doesn't increase the stock O.D. like a pressed knurl. There's a pic somewhere. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

picture, picture, picture!

have you tried it on delrin yet? i tried knurling some delrin yesterday, and while i wasn't able to get a very deep knurl, it came out pretty nice, much better than i expected, as delrin isn't supposed to knurl very well.

This one or this one ?

I dont understand how the 1st one is supposed to work.

Speaking of knurling, 2 days ago I was in the CNC shop thats making the run of the Neoca wood and they never did knurling using the CNC lathes. So off they went to purchase a knurler, happily the owner returned with a spanking new self centering knurler.

It wont fit in the tool holder of the CNC so they milled the handle a little and tried.

I was next to the lathe when a super loud BAAAAAAM took the place by surprise...

The knurler was a little bit longer than the allowed by the CNC rotating toolholder /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Luckily no harm done, and the knurling will be made by hand /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The CNC Lathe is a Femco HL25 (2003) and I never saw the brand before, I liked the arm for setting the tools zero, super handy.

This one. As it is longitudinally fed, it cuts the knurl. I've only used it a few times and am still on the learning curve with it.
