I have come across an old (15 years or so) AA Mini Maglite with a different type of bulb in it. Today's Mini Mags use a bi-pin bulb. This bulb has a flanged connector on it. I have attached a photo rather than try to explain it.

Does anyone know the model number of this bulb and where I can get one (or 10)?

I was also thinking that I may be able to upgrade this light to a new style AA switch assembly and change over to a bi-pin LM2A001 bulb. Any thoughts on this as well?

Thanks!

Have not seen a MM thats not bi-pin bulb, that light might be a knock off look alike? As for the bulb looks like the same used by the old Tekna 2AA light,as far as getting one?

The face cap on the light has "Cabela's" on it. The light was sold by Cabela's, but they are not responding to customer inquiries regarding this issue (figures, huh? :) It is certainly possible that this is not a maglite but rather a knock-off as you suggest. Has Mag always inscribed the "Mag Instrument, Inc" on the facecap of their flashlights...even in the 80's? If there is no official "Mag" inscription in the face cap, then I guess this model is not a genuine Maglite.

That would be my guess. Cabelas is known for selling "rebranded" stuff, so it wouldn't surprise me.

I'd send that picture and all relevant information to Mag's customer support. They're very good at responding to questions, etc.

I don't remember Mag ever using those midget flange bulbs and my minimag is at least that old. Anyway it's possible that the Tekna/Tek-tite bulbs will fit:

you'll have to compare the photo to your bulb since the photo you posted isn't that clear. I have a Mono-Lith so if it helps I can measure the bulb so you can compare the measurements with yours.

MiniMags have always had bi-pin bulbs. As others have already mentioned, the light that you have pictured is not a MiniMag, but rather a similar product made by some other manufacturer. The bulb itself looks a lot like the ones used in the AA aluminum lights that were imported from Asia.

That probably is a 6mm midget flange bulb of around 2.4v. Should not be too hard to find. As paulr suggested I would try a TREK 200 bulb from Tektite if you can't find one easily.

Response from Mag is that no bulb other than the bi-pin bulb (LM2A001) has ever been used in genuine AA Mini-Mag flashlights. Therefore, this one is not a Maglite, but a knock-off of some sort that Cabela's purchased cheaply and resold with their logo on the face cap. Mag also assured me that from the beginnings of Maglite, the "circumferential inscription" has been applied to the face cap of each and every genuine Maglite flashlight that has been manufactured.

As for the bulb issue...I think the best bet will be to go with the TREK 200 bulb and see if it works. If not, go from there. I am fairly certain that the light output from a .22 L.R. round will not last long enough to get any work done, but it may destroy the flashlight and force one to purchase a new Genuine Mini Mag. So yeah...use the rifle shell :)

Indeed. They did change the inscription text, though, but it's always been there. I posted a couple of pics of the "old" and "new" bezel rings on the Minimag collections thread if somebody wants to take a peek.
