I want a Two AA light that has a low mode (lower lumen for longer run time) that I can get a diffuser for and hang in my tent or light up my camp site (I occassionally sleep out alone )

And keep it $55 or less.

Fenix TK20 2AA (warm beam) can be found for about $48 shipped and includes a low setting--I think Low is about 40 lumens. (High is 150 out the front.) Fenix sells a white cone for the TK10 and TK20 that turns the light into a bright candle. If you find both from the same vendor, you might come in below $55.

My indoor light is an Eagletac P20A2 in neutral tint. It has 2 modes; maybe an ultralow mode that's hidden. What's cool is that it comes with a screw-on diffuser lens. I keep the diffuser lens attached at all times. The resulting beam is very diffuse--I'd say 40 or 50 degrees.

quark aax2, 1 month on lowest mode, can use a snap in diffuser made out of water bottle cap. <$55 shipped

Give the Quark AA2 a look. It has a low low mode (0.2 OTF lumens) but can also put out lots of light when you need it (209 OTF lumens) and everything in between. It's a bit over your $55 limit, but the Quarks are very nice lights.

I don't consider the low of the TK20 is a true low mode. Depends what the op wants in terms of brightness and runtime.

i got the fenix white diffuser tip for my fenix ld20 (2xaa light). i think this kind of diffuser is what you need for your purpose as opposed to a diffuser lens, regardless of what brand of flashlight you're going to get. the light is diffused almost omnidirectionally, like a light bulb.

Can you elaborate?

many bottles of water have translucent caps. you cut out the center in a flat disk, and just press fit it inside the bezel. the small lip created by the o-ring between the bezel and lens holds it in place. takes 5 minutes and costs nothing.

O.K., that makes sense. I've been looking for something to snap over the head. I had never considered snapping something into the head.
