AB custom 1AAA LED light for a local CPF\'er...

A simple custom 1AAA light for a local CPF'er:

One of the mods I got done over the weekend was a cute little Nichia S-rank 9200 mcd conversion in a simple 1AAA mini-flashlight with clickie tailswitch. CPF member Mrd_74 lives just a day's drive away and sent this light over for an LED conversion - sort of a "see what you think you can do with this" kind of proposition. The engineer in me loves this kind of project! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

After having a close look at the light it appeared to be a really nicely made little unit but its' original rice-grain-sized bulb was a real loser. Terrible beam and not bright at all. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I thought that the reflecter in this unit would be a really nice feature if the LED could be focused with it. I have some terrific Nichia S-ranked 9200(!) mcd LEDs on hand so it seemed natural to fit one of them to this light. I removed the bulb assembly and disassembled it. Next the bulb holder was modified and got a Nichia LED installed. The LED's shoulder was ground to shape to fit in the light, and the bulb-holder assembly in the light barrel was reamed to a slightly enlarged diameter.

Next an appropriate current-limiting resistor was fitted to the base of the LED emitter assembly and enclosed in a barrel/battery spacer. All of this was reassembled into the light along with a Duracell MN21 or 21/23 12V battery. (the barrel/battery spacer makes up the difference in length between this and the original AAA battery).

Finally, the emitter-reflector spacing was corrected for optimal focus. This was done by fortuitous means rather than scientific calculation - I happened to have some nice little o-rings on hand that fit the thread diameter on the light barrel perfectly and which also turned out to have an ideal thickness. One of these between the bezel and the barrel set the focus perfectly. I added another of the same o-ring to a machined circumferential groove in the light body just to give it a bit more symmetry.

Here is the result:

Sorry no better beamshots. Until I build up another one of these lights that's all the photos I have. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif

I had this light in the workshop at the same time as about a dozen others over the weekend and somehow managed to skip doing more beamshots on this one. The light is easily as bright as my best ARC AAA LE and has a more piercing beam since it benefits from the focused reflector.

This little light has since been sent home to its' owner who seems really happy with it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I did get two more of the donor bodies and will be building one up for my own collection... (and I'll get some beamshots posted!) so if anyone here is interested in one of these for themselves please let me know!

p.s. - or alternately you could make up one of your own... I do have lots of great LEDs available over in B/S/T. Super bright whites, reds, green, blues, UV as well as these exceptional Nichia S-ranked units, little reflectors, etc. Prices are good and airmail is included - all excess stock from the AB workshop: Superbright LEDs: colours, Nichia S-rank whites...

AB, cool mod! what kind of clickie is that?

Re: AB custom 1AAA LED light for a local CPF\'er...

It's the one that came on the light - which looks quite a bit like a Mag Solitaire but isn't.

Thanks for the interest Tyler!

I'll drop you a PM and we can discuss.

AB,
How hard would it be for a newbie to mod a minimag 2 AAA? Just put in the Nichia S-ranked 9200 LED and use 3 Ncells?

I've done a 2AAA minimag as well. Three N-cells will work although you might like to consider a means of current limiting to increase battery life and decrease the initial overdrive.

Nice little mod, AB!

I just found the almost identical light for $1.88 only it has a slightly larger head & reflector.

The head rotates to focus Mini-Mag style. You're right, the OEM lamp is lame. Still waiting for those Nicia's and Superwhite's I ordered. I'd like to try the same mod when they arrive.

If you don't mind my asking, what resistor value do you think is optimal for the 12V MN21 battery?

Hi Illuminated, nice light you have there! I have another one that's even got a slightly larger head and reflector than yours. It has promotional markings on it - I guess there's a family of these out there! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've been using 270R for the current limiting resistor. The MN21 drags down quite a bit under load so the limit resistor turns out to be a little smaller than you might imagine.

good luck!

Re: AB custom 1AAA LED light for a local CPF\'er...

with the model Illuminated has, would it be possible to fit a 1 transistor stepup circuit in the larger head and continue to use AAA's?

Re: AB custom 1AAA LED light for a local CPF\'er...

Hi AB - Thanks for the res info.

Just an observation, there is about 1/4" difference between having the head screwed all the way on (reflector against lamp holder) and having the head screwed out before exposing the O-ring. I guess this means that there is a little room to work with there. Waddaya think?

I bought four of these from Sears (Sears part number 34 93419 1 AAA Mini Tool Light) a few weeks back. Just about $2 a piece. They came with Dorcy batteries and the very dim bulb.
I have been pondering mods for this light for a while. The reflector on mine appears to be pressed in from the front. I don't see a lot of room inside the head for a circuit but I have not pushed one of the reflectors out yet.

Re: AB custom 1AAA LED light for a local CPF\'er...

AB,

Thanks for posting info about your AAA mod. If I had not seen yours I would not have bought the similar one.

I finally got around to modding it and it works rather well. Since I replaced the LEDs in my Matrix module with your 9200mcd Nichias, I decided to use one of the leftover Matrix LEDs in this mod.

I had to enlarge the hole in the bulb holder just enough to clear the leads of the LED. The LED base sits flat atop the bulb holder. After enlarging the hole in the reflector, I found that putting a tiny O-ring on the LED so it sits on the lip makes a perfect focus stop.

The focus remains adjustable from "flood" to "spot". When the head is screwed down and the reflector stops on the LED O-ring, I get a well-defined and even *white* hot spot with some faint but useable corona. When backed off 1-turn or so the hotspot disperses leaving a slightly brighter corona with a bluish center - similar to a luxeon w/NX05 optics (only dimmer).

After using the light for a few days, I find that the spot works very well for close-up illumination of small parts/assemblies, or from 12--36 inches inside/underneath machine bases where overhead lighting does not reach.

The flood setting seems better-suited for darker situations like map reading, where the reflection from a bright spot would affect night vision.

Thanks again for sharing your ideas!

John
