All hail the mighty \"N\" cell!!!

It is a puny little fart, but three of them kicks the SNOT out of two AAs.

I will try to get beamshots of identical Linrose 10 Candela green LEDs driven by 3N and 2AA... it is remarkable!!!

I am 25% on the way to my new computer for home, from which I will then be able to take AND post pics. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: All hail the mighty

I imagine you trade off intense initial brightness (due to the 50% overdrive above the 2AA) for rapid decline and reduced runtime. This might be useful for some applications...but I can't imagine what. I have a 3N red laser that is still chugging along after several years of intermittent use.

BTW, that's a helluva lot of light Joe! Looks like you've got every Mag D from 2-6.

Actually Wilkey...

The LED is SO VERY MUCH BRIGHTER, it is nearly unbelievable!
And I'm an intermitent user if ever there was one!

The 6D you see is an old Rayovac 3D (x2). Dad and I both had one. The barrel unscrews from the switch segment which unscrews from the head. One reflector got cruddy BAD. So two lights made one 6D (with 7C in it)

The 5D you see is a Brinkmann 5-3-2 (without the yellow sleeve - and with 6C in it)

The 4-2 are M*gs, but a couple of the 3D's are other brand stuff like Greatlite and Dorcy.

I just passed up two packs of Ns at Wallyworld (Duracells at 3.99 pack), at Academy (Energizes at 2.99 pack) and got three packs at Home Depot (Duracell at 2.18 pack).

A rechargeable N cell is, in essense, a 2/3 AA NiMH...

Joe,

Interesting! I sense that you really like C cells. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: All hail the mighty

Came from Frys, and I have seen them on their web site.

Package says "Linrose Superbrite LED - 10 Candela! - Warning! Do not stare at LED may injure eyes - model B4304H95 - Green - 10 Candela! - Sunburst Series"

Respond nicely to three Ns, awfully dim with two AAs. I fried one in seconds with 2 CR123As...

Re: All hail the mighty

It is more the fact that an extra one will fit in most any D light for no real weight penalty and a percentage from a high of 33% to as little as 12-14% in the 6D.

They cost same as Ds though.

Re: All hail the mighty

I suspect the LEDs in question need more than 3V to function
correctly. I have some white, blue, and UV LEDs that work
pretty pathetically off a single 2032 li coin cell (3V), even
though they're SUPPOSED to need >3.6V (I was surprised that
they worked at all.) The improvement in going to two cells
(6V) is very impressive, and perhaps you're seeing something
similar here with the linrose LEDs...

Actually, the 2/3AA cells that I use are very noticeably larger in dia.
compared to the real "N" cells that I also use. The dia. of the "N' cell being just about in between the "AAA" and the "AA".

BTW-the "N" cell is avail. in Nimh (350mAh) from your local Rat Shack store. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: All hail the mighty

Yes, it's the voltage that makes the difference. Green and blue and white LED's require a bit more than 3 volts to turn on fully. Two alkalines, no matter what the size, just don't produce sufficient voltage.
