Alternative battery

I know we have modders out there. I was wondering if this type of battery could be used in a flashlight design? It would break the traditional round battery style but the charger could be researched as a nice alternative because it's USB. Voltage and storage capacities look like they have potential. Hey I might be off base but it doesn't hurt to ask I guess.

Part Number: AHDBT-001
Output: 3.7V
Capacity: 1100mAh
Dimensions: 1.75" x 1.38" x .31"/4.45cm x 3.49cm x .79cm (H x W x D)

Taken from HD Hero page:
Rechargeable Lithium-Ion, Built in Battery Warmer

The rechargeable 1100mAh lithium-ion battery (included) lasts for 2.5 hours of constant recording. It can be recharged to 80% capacity in just 2 hours when plugged into a computer's USB port, or in 1 hour when plugged into a USB compatible wall or car charger. Camera can also be used while charging...handy on road trips where it's fun to leave the camera rolling. Camera also features an integrated battery heating system for keeping your battery warm in winter activities.

Looks like a great idea as its good to see alternatives being built or even being thought of.

1) There is the eneloop 2AA usb power pod that you could charge through usb and then can be a power device as well. The only thing you would have to do is pick a usb voltage led driver and then solder it to a male usb. This would be awesome and I would for sure buy one. Then it could be used for charging cell phones and etc.

2) Using you existing idea, you could use a couple of those solar usb power paks. As they sell them on ebay for like 10 buks each and they have a flexible li-ion battery inside. Its like a capri sun but only 1/8" thick and 2"x4" and can be rolled up into a tube. They are around 2200mah to 2600mah. They have a built in mini usb port and charge relatively quick through a computers port. These take a few hours to charge.

3) Here is one that I bought and it uses a 18650 that most cpfers on here love. It has a slim design and if you were to incorporate it into a c cell light it would be awesome. It has all the ground work for you but you have to pick a body as the head of the light is aluminum but the body is plastic. I had put a seoul p4 in mine as the one in there was verrrrry green and dim. Now its as bright as a the icon rogue 1 i got and will run for about five hours. It charges in about 2 hours and has potential if you use a xpe or xpg led.

One thing is using the battery you have pictures above, it would have to be a dcell sized flashlight to fit it. But if you wanted to make a flat flashlight that would be awesome as its different and would be your design. Would like to see what comes to mind in the future. Love the idea so far.
Keep us posted as I can somewhat help.
Welcome to CPF!!!
Hope this helps...

Weird, I have a smart phone with a similar battery, very low capacity at 1350 mAh and I thought 2x18650 would be a great alternative to it, only if someone build it big enough. With smart phones that have laptop capabilities in a tiny package, you really need more like 5000-6000 mAh. I have to recharge mine 2 times per day and that's with minimal usage.

So to answer your post, no, I think these little square cells are no alternative at all. They need to stop listening to marketing and build a smart phone with a huge cell.

Thanks for the welcomes.

I'm getting hooked on budget and or less expensive lights at the moment, funds, funds, lack of funds. However my past tool and die making thoughts are creeping into my mind to at least make a neat host. Waiting on some P60 drop ins to test them out in my G2 and CL1H.

Interesting little pieces that Sabrewolf makes. I like the idea of different forms as well as edited standard-ish round designs. A lot of the custom makers have a lot of talent and creativity.

Burgess, I'm all about the puns;)

These batteries would allow a very thin pocket torch to be made - but unless you're going to use 5mm LEDs with the right beamwidth, you're going to have trouble getting some good optics to fit in such a slim package.
