is there a better propane lantern besides coleman? gearing up for night fishing and my glass globe is cracked, again! if you look at this pos hard it will break! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif it's $8 a pop at wal mart too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif on high the hiss is a bit much.

the only other brand i've seen is northstar, are these any good? will it solve any of my problems? i need to know by saturday.

comments/suggestions welcome

Hello tkl,

The Coleman Northstar is the brightest propane lantern around. It has a metal cage around the globe to help protect it against breakage. We have used the Northstar in our Boy Scout troop for a couple of years now. Only had one problem, the control valve would not shut the light off. Replaced it and both of them are working great.

We keep the lantern in a case while traveling and have not had a globe break... yet.

The other choice is a brand called White Stag. I read that they were having a re-call on some of their propane lanterns around Christmas time. I decided to stay away from them for awhile.

thanks. going to academy today to check em out.

looked at a north star today, didn't see much difference other than it is a single mantle propane with electric start.

how much brighter is the north star versus the coleman 2 mantle propane?? the north star is $40, trying to decide if it's $20 better than my 2 mantle propane.

Hello tkl,

When we were looking at lanterns, the Northstar was brighter than any of the two mantle lanterns. They don't offer lumens or candlepower ratings, so you just go by visual checking.

The Northstar is supposed to be more rugged than the other lanterns.

Good luck.

Tom

if my $20 coleman ever bites the dust i might get one. i'll have a hard time convincing myself the northstar is twice as good.

actually, if it's quieter than the dual mantle and fair amount brighter it probably is twice as good...
