While I was familiar with lights 1, 3 & 4, I've not read or seen anything here on CPF about a VSS-2a. It looks to be the VSS-1 with only infrared capability.
This publication lists the 3a as infrared only, which we know to be incorrect. Interesting that the caution distances for flash blindness are in the 3,000 meter range for the -3a and only 200 Meters for the -1. They both are rated at 100-150 MCP but the -3a consumes only 1KW as opposed to the -1 @ 2.2KW. The beam of the -3a must be significantly more focused I would guess.
