I have tried to EDC a fixed blade a few times, but it never works for me. Lots of times I need a larger blade to deal with underbrush or other things, but the fixed blade has always proved too much trouble and too uncomfortable. I only need to carry maybe a 4" or 5" blade, and I don't want to hack around with a folder.

Just wondered if anybody had a good system or suggestions. In the past I have EDC'd a Reeve Mountaineer, a CS mini tanto, a BM Nimravus Cub, but couldn't stay with them.

The AG Russell Deer Hunter has a really nice sheath system for EDC. Great knife, too. I've been wanting one for a long time:

If you want a folder, Cold Steel has some pretty monstrous ones including a six inch Voyager. Actually might be sturdier for hacking through underbrush than the thin-bladed AGDH.

I'll second the Howling Rat ! Great small knife... Although I dislike the black coating and the overall 'tactical' look for everyday chores. That's why I prefer a Black Jack The Small in a custom leather sheath that allows horizontal belt carry.

Here's my occassional EDC (it travels in my messenger bag even when I'm not wearing it, and I don it when I need a fixed). I made my own Kydex IWB sheath that can be swiveled and accessed with either hand from the small of my back and removed quickly for sitting in vehicles etc., but Bob's sheaths are really nice too and he offers several styles (I believe he was one of the pioneers of the Kydex revolution along with Bob Terzuola) Nice man, nice wife and nice price for a tough useful D2 bladed knife. He makes some other great stuff too including his new/old "classic" line with stacked leather and stag and brass etc.

I used to live not far from Bob, he is a big pistol shooter, we shot together some. I was really suprised years later when I heard he made knives, he never mentioned it. Might go up to his place and look at his stuff in person.

Worth the trip. My dad has a couple of his hunters as well. nice and compact, lightweight and tough just like his ads state they are made to use.

tsg,
That Arkansas toothpick is very nice!! What does something like that set you back, if you don't mind me asking that is. I think I may have to start savin for one of those, very, very nice indeed. Doug /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Doug, I believe I paid $215 for my toothpick because it has the red micarta bulls eye around the front pin (good price for a handmade by a well known maker). The toothpick is such a nice design that it's been copied a few times by lesser mass manufacturers. I think the standard micarta in colors, and without the bulls eye, costs around $195. Bob just took an increase on them (probably his first in around 8 or so years and well deserved) last fall, as they used to be around $170 for the standard micarta. All of the info on his knives can be found at www.dozierknives.com. Feel free to email about any questions, he or his wife is sure to answer. They are really nice folks. I love the knife, as I said my Dad is also a great fan of them and uses a Dozier hunting. I saw a great article on the Toothpick by Jerry Van Cook in Tactical Knives magazine last fall if you can get it somehow.

Call me a smart ***, but it is a fixed blade. I have a nice boot knife for when I'm wearing my Nocona's.
