A few "expensive" flashlights (say > $50) have a rotating bezel allowing to adjust the brightness, like discussed in this thread. The cheapest one listed in this thread must be the Fenix L1T (?)
Do you know any "budget" flashlight with such an UI (clicky tail switch for on/off, and brightness adjustment depending on the bezel position)?

Ultrafire ZF7371

Thanks. Not sold on DX apparently, found on eBay.
But a bit reluctant to spend $40 on an Ultrafire light.
I was rather happy with a single AA C3, had trouble with the two AA version, but both were well below $20.

Interesting, thanks for the suggestion.
A bit bulky though, I'd prefer a more compact model.
Moreover, I'd appreciate if it could tailstand.
With this in mind, I wonder if the Nitecore EZ (AA or 123 or CR2) would not be a good option: very compact, does tailstand, two brightness levels adjusted with the bezel. Definitely not in the budget section though, maybe a second hand one?

iTP Light models C8T (forward clickie) and C8R (reverse clickie) use 2xAA. The C8 head interchanges with C7 (1xAA) and C9 (1x123) bodies, each of which will give variable brightness advertised between 6-190 lumens. Whatever the actual lumen figures, the variable brightness is a very nice feature.

My C8T is somewhat bulky (more so than a minimag, Streamlight Jr, or Fenix LD20). No iTP models tailstand, but do meet your original requirement of having a rotating head to vary brightness; and they are <$50 (shipped).
