Does anybody has experience in HDD camcorder? I am looking at the SONY SR300 (40GB) and the SR7 (HD, 60GB) and kinda undecided which one to go with ...

the price difference is about 40% ($300 something) but the SR7 does have more functionally. the SR8 (HD, 100GB) is just like a SR7 with 40% more HDD space for $150 more. -_-

where online is a good place to buy?

I have one of the first JVC 20gb HDD camcorders. I love the thing. It can hold more video than I ever intend to take at one outing. The quality of the picture is better than any of the tape camcorders i've owned in the past. And probably the best selling point for me at least is you can dump the video onto your computer without having to convert formats.

The JVC is small and light. The only type smaller I think are the Samsung, Sanyo type flash camcorders. Those are now available in HD too.

Damn, now I want one. I'm quickly outgrowing my Sony minDV cam. I wonder if they will come with upgradeable hard drives? You know those will fail eventually and also be available in larger sizes.

I don't see why you couldn't upgrade the HDD. All you would have to do is make a ghost image of the existing one, then when the time comes to repalce the factory drive just get a new HDD, load the ghost image and it should be good to go.

Even with only a 20gb drive in my JVC I can record 20 or 30 hours of high quality video. I'm not sure I would need a larger HDD. Considering the battery only lasts for an hour and a half or so per charge, if I was going to be recording 20+ hours worth I would dump the recorded video while charging the battery.

I don't have one but my friend does. The main problem is the HD will shutdown if subject to shock and vibration. So don't plan on using it as an Action cam attached to your bike or anything.
