Just wonder if anyone has replaced the stock Luxeon LED in their Surefire U2 with a Cree or Seoul SS4. And if the mods made any difference in flood and throw. Love the U2 but just need a little more flood and throw. Thanks.

Good question. However, I would recommend that you move it over to the LED forum. And no, I don't have a U2.

I think it was established in other such threads that this would not work in that the U2 uses a boost circuit that is set to provide 6+ volts to the led. You would need a buck, or buck boost circuit to run a Cree or Seoul. Also, why would this be necessary. The current U2's with high flux lux V leds are excellent. This goes for the KL4, KL5, and KL6, though the KL6 is a good candidate for this mod in that it runs with a buck circuit. I had my my lux III lights modded with Cree and Seoul's to get Lux V light output, W and X bin, type light output.

I know of a very special U2 that is being built right now using 4 SSC P4 LED's ;)

It's a 2 series 2 parallel design, so the 4 LED's act much the same as the 4 dies of the Luxeon V did.

You could do it with just 2 LED's but that would look a little silly.

I have Seouled my U2.
In comparison with a couple of other U2s with hand-picked Lux V emitters in, it would seem to have very similar output to the originals. The advantage is in roughly double the runtime and running very cool to the touch. The disadvantages are that you are limited to using single-cell only ie 18650 or 17670 or similar (that is two primary cells will cause problems as outlined by Bullzeyebill above), the levels become less useful (1 and 2 very low, 3,4,5 and 6 have smaller steps between them) and you might scratch the head as you do it.. .It is hard to open the U2, and so you should think carefully about the risk / benefit ratio.
