Anyone know what these are called and where to get them?

I am looking to get some of these connectors. Modamag shows them in his tutorial for building a Tri-Star. I can't for the life of me find what they are called, who makes them or where I can order some. The picture shows the female portion, I would obviously also want the male as well. These are very similar to what one would find on a motherboard to connect a fan.

I have found smallish Dean connectors but I'd really prefer these.

If anyone knows what they are called or where I can get some please let me know.

Thanks!

MM - I don't believe that it is a Molex. When I get home tonight I will see whether I can locate a little more information. KK

Molex are the 4 pin connectors you would find on older Parallel ATA drives as well as most optical drives.

MM I think they are called JST connectors

Yes, I am very well aware what Molex connectors are. I custom wired my PC making my own power cables sans the SATA cables.

The JST are the ones I currently have and are bigger than the ones Modamag used. The ones DonShock linked to are pretty close although the female he linked to is a 3 pin not 2. I also hope to find the female with the leads already attached so I don't have to mess with crimping the small pins that slide into the plug.

IIRC Molex is a company, and the connector pictured is just one size of one kind that they make. So I think it's that kind of pin and socket connector that's called a Molex connector. YMMV.

If you don't want to crimp (and who does? It sucks), how about some Deans micro plugs? You just solder to the pins and heatshrink the joint. No crimping. I've used them and they're nice. Also, they're available at your local hobby shop.

From that link: Deans announces the Mirco Plug connector series. Wish they had better pictures of them. And darker text (especially with it being small). :scowl: What sort of force to put them together and pull them apart?

They're tight enough that I'm very sure they won't come apart by themselves but not so tight that pulling them apart is a challenge. It may sound a little fanboy-ish, but they're 'just right'. They wouldn't be so popular with RC guys if they weren't good.

Mirage_Man, if you want that exact setup, it will take me awhile but we can find all the right male and female connectors and all the pins and stuff. It will also probably require you to also get a specific crimper which I am sure will be 100 to 200 bucks.

That's why many of us are using the 3 wire Y type computer fan cables that are available fairly cheaply. Since nobody will really see them, I just cut off one of the wires.

Here is a link to a 7 inch one I found which I think I will start ordering vs. the Y type one. (I cleaned out the local CompUSA a month ago or so)

Give me a couple of days to remember what piece of equipment and/or industry has some of this stuff already premade for them. I know I have seen it someplace. Start looking at work tomorrow!!

Actually, the link is for the 2 pin version. The generic 3 pin picture is used for all of the versions. But if you look at the actual product description, it only has two contacts.

I've assembled connectors with small male/female pins. You don't really need the special crimper. For power applications you should solder them as well as crimp anyway. I used needle nose pliers to crimp them dowm tight enough just to hold the wire, then soldered. The crimpers are nice, but unnecessary.

Those are molex style connectors. I used to use them in my Mag mods. I used to buy them from Fry's (shown in Ctechlite's link) but they're expensive. Not sure if they have Fry's in you area.

Then I started buying them at a local electronics place. They have em' in unpackaged bulk for real cheap but they don't list them in their webstore. Online they only sell them pre crimped with wires here. They have a huge selection of bulk connectors in store but not nearly as much one. Might want to check out ther others they have.

darkzero, those are just what I'm looking for with one exception. I want the jacket to be Teflon. I hope I'm wrong but the wire pictured does not appear to be Teflon.
