Well , I been thinking of doing a mod to the terralux unit for my 3D maglite .
Anyone done this ?

So far I have ordered a XR-E P4 on a 14mm base and I just might direct drive it , Im not sure I could fit a resistor in there .

Input welcome !

Update ! I measured the voltage going to the LED , and its 3.5 , so looks like it should be a straight forward Mod .

Is that one of the old luxeon III drop-ins? A simple emitter swap with a seoul P4 would give you the best bang for your buck and work better with the maglite's reflector then a cree. You would also be able to use the same circuitry in the module.

Yep , one of the early ones .

Ive been thinking about the LED placement within the reflector , and I have a fix for that , I just need to lower the assembly on the Mag .

The terralux assembly is 15mm Dia , and the P4 will sit on a 14mm base , so will hopefully heatsink better .

A direct swap would mean empty space under the LED , so that could = very short life .

Hmmm . I was looking at the Seoul P4 , SSC A42180 T-Bin LED and USX0H Seoul P4 Emittor (SSC LED) .

But like I said , they would be sitting over thin air .

And the Cree P4 on the 14mm base , it looks like it will heatsink just fine .
:)

Q5 , would it have too much heat , I was planning on using the Terralux unit as the heatsink .

+ I used the P4 in another mod , and it puts out heaps of light , though its all flood and very little throw , the heatsink only gets mildly warm , and the P4 draws about 450mAh .

+ If all is done correctly I should be able to adjust flood VS throw .

But yeah , a Q5 would put out more . but then I would need a multi mode driver . Hmmmmmmm

Just shim it. The seoul P4's aren't as tall and require a shim of sorts in some cases when performing an emitter swap with luxeon LEDs, but that shouldn't be too difficult to do. Also, is your maglite stock? Has the reflector or switch assembly been modified in some way? If not, then the whole cam system maglite has in their lights will work fine for focusing from flood to throw. Weren't these drop-ins made so they could go up and down the cam shaft like the bulb retaining ring?

The drive circuit will be the same so current supplied to the led should remain the same. I don't see why you would need a multi mode driver unless you want one.

Yes , 100% stock 3D Mag , with early terralux . + I still have my 6D that may also need moding if this works out ok . [ Also with terralux ]

Im planing on getting some more LED's in the future , so will see , there may be a Q2-5 in this maglites future , maybe even a R2 if I can find one on a 14mm base .

Q5 or R2 , Id deff want multi mode . I have a Q3 and a R2 flashy , and both get very warm on Hi .

I'm still a bit confused here so please bear with me. I just don't see how the extra height with a P4 will make it necessary to lower the assembly. When you say assembly, do you mean the switch assembly? Even if a P4 sits a few millimeters higher, the maglite's cam system should give you more then enough room for error and allow you to focus with no problems.

Yes and no = Depending on focus .
Currently the terralux sits flush with the bottom of the reflector at its lowest position , so ATM I dont know how much higher the P4 will sit , from my other P4 Cree , my guess would be 3mm + .

I will mod first , and then test , if I cant get it to focus like I want , then I will remove a few mm's from the stem that the terralux screws onto .

[ Stem ?? ] can I say that ?
