The new Fraen Low Profile optic that is going into the Baby Pins on the current run continues to impress in other HD Luxeon lights. I swapped out the NX-05 in my Arc LSH-P and light meter readings jumped significantly. It appears to throw slightly farther now as well.

Here it is with another lil'un, the SF E1e/KL1:

Obviously the Arc is on the right, as it is in the following beamshots as well. The first is from two feet away on the inside of my laundry room door...

...and then from 20 feet angled down below my sloped living room ceiling:

You can see that the Arc w/Fraen hangs on to its central hotspot better than the SF KL1, which has a Batwing LS w/ NX-05 optic. And contrary to initial reports, the Arc still retains usable sidespill light.

From a meter away the SF KL1 made this many lux:

The "old" Arc LSH-P w/NX-05 made 349 lux from the same distance.

But with the Fraen Low Profile optic it now makes this:

An increase of 90 lux just by replacing the NX-05 with the Fraen. Hey Peter Gransee, you listening?

Hmmm, this new Fraen is cool. Lemme see what else I can swap...

I wish my Trilight (and LGI) had HDs now that I have the Fraens, it is a great combo.

Why does anyone use the batwing LEDs? Are they superior in ANY way?

Must be rough waiting on the rest of them Fraens to come in. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/poke2.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink2.gif

Hey Peter, are ya listening? I think there's an echo in here. I meant to bring by one of these Fraens to show Peter last week but memory slipped my mind. I'll have to remember this week. Got a feeling he won't be too excited for the lack of any sidespill. Still, I tend to carry several lights and an Arc with a Fraen LP will soon be one of my EDC's.

A lil off topic but I'm wondering if a metal/alu reflector would be better than an optic for directing light in small dimensions like this or would optics like the Fraen LP do better because they can have "floating" reflective surface on top of the LS to reflect the light to the side so as to have more throw. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/broke.gif

Also is it possible that the position of the Fraen LP optic has anything to do with the side spill? I'm thinking if it's elevated just 0.5 or 1 mm above the LS, does the beam pattern change? etc etc...

I think it's hard to beat optics under special conditions, and this is probably one of those. I don't think any reflector occupying the same volume as the Fraen LP can achieve the same effect, but this is strictly speculation on my part.

rad, the bats were the first Luxeons made is all, and they're just still around. If you want a nice, fairly medium-throwing flood, there is still not much that can beat a bat with the NX-05, they were made for each other - literally. The standard LGI would still outshine and outthrow the Arc/Fraen shown here. And the LGI that I just put together with a HD Q3J and Fraen -- well, let's just say there's so much to be said about that combo that I will start another thread eventually once I get it wrung out, test-wise. I will say that it easily cracks the 1,000 lux barrier, but nufsed for now on this one.

Snuff, it is HELL!!!

CM, yeah this Fraen thing is da bomb. You'll soon see!

Nerd, I will try the elevation thing next, ni my rush to test this out I simply dropped the Fraen down and screwed in the metal retaining ring. There is a nylon threaded ring that will hold the optic up in position, although I am not sure the "spring ring" can be used between the circuit board and the nylon ring to gain some gap. May short things out.

Cris,

To demo the low profile Fraen to Peter, you'll need a venue that's dark and long. I'm not talking a 10- or 20-feet range but 100+ feet.

BTW, I estimate the boosted ARC LSH-P with Fraeon will easily do 200 feet.

MR Bulk,

Now I'm confused. I found the following "rings" in my ARC LSH-P purchased earlier this year. First is a plastic washer ring between the lens and optics. In the back of the optics are two rings that hold the optics in place, i.e. a (non-threaded) plastic holder ring and a threaded metal retaining ring. Then there's the sandwich. In the back of sandwich are a brass ring and a metal retaining ring. Is the setup the same as yours?

Hi Mr. Bulk,

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before... But how did you get the fraen into the ARC? I'd like to do this mod myself, but it seems a lot more difficult with the new ARC LS design...

Cheers,

Victor

Have something to clamp on the head, unscrew the front bezel by brute force? Preferbly have some leather belt on the head or something before clamping it down.

Al, mine does not have two rings behind the optics, just the threaded white nylon one. Otherwise the same as yours.

Curvie, I just replied to your message.

Nerd, there is no front bezel on mine, the head is one piece. All screwing/unscrweing is done from behind (hey, that's what that Greek girl told me last ni -- nevermind!).

Ops, my bad. I just noticed the small slot on the metal piece inside the head. I wonder what did you use to unscrew that ring. And what is the bronze/copper coloured dried paste metal like thing? A sealant?

I hope the picture explains it. The colour is not so yellow as in the picture, it's more urm....light bronze brown. But you get the idea. Pardon my mediocore photo taking skills, it's dark here, nite time and the inside of the bezel is illuminated by my trusty Arc AAA. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for the pics and info MR Bulk your posts are always full of interesting stuff /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif

I had some of that inside an LSH. It wiped-off with a cotton swab FYI. Looked like an anti-seize conductive lube (just a guess).

Just read the thread. And yes, I am listening. Nice looking mod Mr. Bulk!

Fraen has some nice products. Refractors have their downsides though. We are going with a reflector for the LS4/LS5. Prelim results show nice beam control.

And yes, I do like some side spill. Not too much though, there is a good balance.

I will take a look at CM's mod when he brings it by.

Peter
