I know how stupid this sounds, but here's why...
I have a 2D maglite clone that I'm going to mod... my first attempt.
I thought I'd only get 3 AA cells together in the tube, but I tried putting 4 eneloops held together into the tube and they fitted - a little snug, but not under pressure. This is at room temperature of 22'C.
So... are eneloops fat, thin, or average? If they are thin, then I suppose I am unlikely to fit any other brand in there 4-gang. If they are fat, then I guess I am ok. I tried some Vanson NiMH but they didn't fit
My tube measures 34.7mm at the tailcap thread point (probably 35mm past that).
My eneloops are 14.15mm and my Vanson cells are 14.28mm
(The Vanson cells are also very very poor and have not lasted, hence replacing with eneloops!)
