I know how stupid this sounds, but here's why...

I have a 2D maglite clone that I'm going to mod... my first attempt.

I thought I'd only get 3 AA cells together in the tube, but I tried putting 4 eneloops held together into the tube and they fitted - a little snug, but not under pressure. This is at room temperature of 22'C.

So... are eneloops fat, thin, or average? If they are thin, then I suppose I am unlikely to fit any other brand in there 4-gang. If they are fat, then I guess I am ok. I tried some Vanson NiMH but they didn't fit :(

My tube measures 34.7mm at the tailcap thread point (probably 35mm past that).

My eneloops are 14.15mm and my Vanson cells are 14.28mm

(The Vanson cells are also very very poor and have not lasted, hence replacing with eneloops!)

Eneloops are average to thin. I can get four eneloops in a Mag 2D tube as well, but I definitely cannot get four Kodak Pre-Charged/GP Recyko in there. Those are fat cells.

I can't comment on their diameter compared to other brands, but they are definitely longer than any other AA battery I have used (LenMar, Panasonic, Duracell)

I Don't know what to say. My 40 or so Eneloops are Shorter/equal to all the well over two hundred AA (primary and rechargable) cells I have. That's 200 cells not brands (maybe 15 different brands)

ex: Sanyo eneloop - 49.66mm length
Duracell Ultra primary - 50.37mm length

my Sanyo eneloops are all 2 - 3 years old.

For the batteries I had on hand the Eneloops measured between 14.11 -14.13mm in diameter. This was on the small side of the Nimhs. Sony Cyber Shots were roughly the same. Rayovac LSD and Energizer measured the same near the negative end of the battery but were larger near the top 14.20-14.26mm. The Duracell primaries measured 13.97 along the length and Rayovac primaries measured 13.94.
So they appear to be a bit larger than primary batteries but on the slim side for Nimhs at least with my samples.

After wrapping a narrow I.D. label around each of my Eneloops, I was unable to remove them from my Dereelight 3AA; the first one would slip out, but to extract the remaining two, I had to thwack the Dereelight against a desk. So I removed the labels.

Now I've bought a 3AA body from FiveMega. In that light, Eneloops slip out effortlessly, even when labeled.
