backing up an Alpha Ready Made...

I agree. Anything you want. I myself would go with a HDS HCRI or a McGizmo Haiku HCRI.

Im not sure what the majority goes with. I have McGizmos myself, and an HDS on order. I regretfully sold my last HDS HCRI. Both are awesome, comes down to personal preference and in some cases how much money you want to spend. I know when I order a McGizmo I am getting a shipping notice shortly after I send the email, not so much with an HDS at this point in time. Getting my light in a timely manner goes a long way with me.

You may want to consider a backup that uses 18650. That way you also have cells in back up.

If you want a Surefire, a C2 would make a good choice. I personally consider them a step or two above the 6P.

If you have other lights that use RCR123s, a McGizmo with a Nichia 4500K 219 could make you very happy.

I would go for someting small.
You wont limp around for long with 2 "big" lights in your pocket. And if your backup is at home, well then it's not a backup light.
I guess you would want something nice and shiny to go along with the alpha. I bet something like a ti lf2xt, or univex aaa with a 10440 would make you smile :)

Elzetta with a Markoff dropin. Not as pretty, but easily as reliable. Same size, but built like a tank.

You can consider the $100 Malkoff MDC in either RCR123 or AA. It is small and will take 1 lithium as a standby / backup.
