I've found that my Badboy 1000mA makes an excelent handwarmer. But why does it flicker, sometimes with new batteries?

Guess a BB1000 can't be in regulation on 1x123 ... and it flickers then.

My BB1000 is running with 2XAA.

chiphead, i suppose you used 2AA rechargeable, correct? Alkaline cannot provide the juice that the BB1000 require. I doubt nimh can too, but they are in better bet than alkaline.

It seems as if the more advanced the unit, the more it's finicky about what drives it. Right now I'm using NiMHy rated at 2450MaHrs.

If using a mini-mag, use only the stock tailcap. Too many issues with the Kroll when running high amps. Also, clean threads thoroughly and run them dry, unless you have a good contact enhancer like Caigs ProGold 1OO. Use high discharge rate cells, not common commercial cells. Try CheapBatteryPacks.com Go to "loose cells" at that site, and look for the CBP1650, a high discharge cell that can handle 1 Amp+ drain easily. These cells will not have a high voltage drop when they are hit with the very high current draw that it takes to deliver 1 amp to the led. Good luck.

Funny thing about those high voltage (1.4V) NiMHy. My portable weather radio will bleed off down to 60~70% on its indicator after 5hrs. But with regular Alkies it can run days without showing a loss in voltage. Weird! I'd like to build another MiniMag with a BB-1000, but they're no longer on the Sandwich site.

I've had the best luck running BB1000 with a single 4.2V li-ion cell. 18650 works best.

If you want a boost converter for a Lux III, go for a NexGen. It will run cooler and more efficiently. I doubt that you are getting 1A to the luxeon on 2AAs, although you will get it with a li-ion cell.
