A question - What is the best rcr123a battery to use with the Novatac series? Protected or unprotected? Since the light itself is protected, is it overkill to use a protected 123? Many thanks for all the advice.

I believe that protected cells are also usually protected from overcharging so that may be something to think about. I've been using mostly the Batterystation RCR123 900ma protected (yellow label) cells and have had good results with them. I did notice one of mine charged up to 4.29 volts though on a charger made for charging protected cells - not sure why that went that high but apparently that charger (which was bought with some Delkin batteries that were protected) must keep trickle charging OR the protection circuit on that one battery is a little on the high side. I've got 6 of these cells and haven't had any go bad in any way yet. Usually get them from Lighthound.com. If you have a good charger though then there may not be much difference with one exception. In an emergency situation I think you might be able to run the unprotected all the way down (thus probably ruining the cell but saving your self) where as the protected cell might not go past it's preset voltage. Novatac will run past the protected setting in an emergency. I forget how that works but I'm sure if you do a battery reset to a standard primary cell then it would run the rechargeable all the way down.
