BB500 sandwich?

Just wondering what peoples experiences with the BB500 are?

Is it anything near the BB400Q3 in color? Does it deliver 20% more light than the BB400? I'm curious why the BB400 and BB500 are the same price.
 
My guess is, they're the same price, only because the BB400 is either a turned down BB500 converter board, or vice versa. No internal difference.

If you were to put an LS, the same LS, in a BB400, and then switch it to a BB500 board, obviously, the BB500 is going to output more light.

Things start to get muddy when you talk about a BB400 with a Q3 upgrade. Then it's wierder, as some Q3s are whiter and brighter than a regular BB500 that can be based on P-ranked equivalents or less...

They are nice! Wayne will sell you the BB500 boards, the R2Hs, and the emitter boards to build your own "sandwiches." Requires a "sharp" soldering pencil, steady hand, and mixing a little epoxy. (Fair and square- easier said than done /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) I have one running on a BB750!= "dazzle bomb!"

Will 2xAA provide enough juice to fully feed a bb750? I had read they wouldn't. Or maybe it was that a single 123 couldn't fully power it. Or am I wrong on both counts?

Determine if the regulator will fall out of regulation before it reaches 1.6V.

If that is the case, you need to ensure that the battery runs out of juice before the converter board does.

The only difference between the BB400 and BB500 converter boards is the current sense resistor. (Different values).
 
Regarding a BB750. Here's the calculation to determine when the BB750 would fall out of regulation. This is one of the key items to consider when using one of these converter boards. Below this Voltage the light will no longer be constant and will diminish as the Vin continues to fall.

Vin * 1.5 = (3.5V * 0.75) / 0.8

Where 1.5 is given by the IC specification.

3.5V is the approximate Vf of a 1W LED (Probably should use 3.8/3.9V for a 750mA condition).

0.8 is 80% efficiency for the converter board.

Vin = 2.18V.

So, around 2.18V and below the BB750 will not be in regulation.

That might be OK with a 123 battery depending on when you consider the 123 depleted.
