Beacon Laser

Hi To all. I would to make/attach a laser beacon on top of my RV. I spend a lot of time in the sand dunes, some weekends there are 100,000 people out there. Needless to say they have a wide variety of blinking, flashing, strobing....lights at their camps to help find their way back. So I would like to have a vertical light you can see from miles away and be the only one out there. The air is quite dusty and should make for a great laser atmosphere! Any recommendations? Green/Yellow/Blue? Prices? Safety?

hmmm. i think this is going to kind of a touchy subject. An unattended laser being lased into the sky.........

Anyway, your going to be after a module with cooling etc, and red is really going to be the most cost effective, but green is cooler. The problem i see would be how are you going to power it?

But as i said at the start, with all these planes getting dotted, its probably not a good idea......

Cool idea though.

Just get a Thor instead, it'll be visable for miles around. Plus it's a smidgen cheaper than your laser idea. .

I have a 5.5 KW generator in the RV. There in not much air traffic in the desert. I dont see how it could shine into a pilots eyes if it is pointing straight up. I am all for following the rules though. Surely do not want any trouble. Just something different and identifiable.

pretty sure it is Yes you are right it would be impossible for for it to lase the cockpit, but rules are rules, and uncle sam really wouldn't like it at all. Plus i just don't like the sound of an unattended laser.

Yeah, I've been to Glamis and Havasu, so I know what you're talking about. Absolute insanity. Scared to ride a dirt bike out there. First and only time I've seen a snowmobile in the sand!

For your beacon: have you seen those long fabric tubes that are often in front of car dealerships? Imagine a fabric cylinder approximately 12" in diameter by ten or twelve feet long, sewn shut at the top and mounted on a fan on the bottom. This fabric "sausage" is pointed straight up, pressurized by the constantly on fan. It bobs and weaves with the wind, drawing attention, which is why they are used at car dealerships.

Make or buy one, put it on the roof of your RV and light it as well. My initial thought was to use a balloon with a light shining on it, but as you already know some joker will shoot it with a pellet rifle or slingshot.

Intelite.com sells laser modules, drivers that can be run off 120v with a plugin adapter.Also checkout Lasrmate.com and http://www.midwest-laser.com/. Best visablity is green.

O.K., lets say I go with a Leadlight modified. I safely mount it atop my RV and I point it into the sky. How wide will the beam be? Will it look like a green thread reaching for the heavens? If so how can I make it wider. I looked at some of the stuff Comozo reccomended (thanks by the way)and those Disco machines make some cool patterns, but will those spread beams continue high into the air? 1500 feet? Maybe I am asking for to much. I dont mind spending $1500 but I want to really be able to see green for green if know what I mean!

LaMigraUSA ... in case you do not know ... you aren't allowed to shine any hight powered laser in the sky without a proper license and I gather you have none.
Please take your time to read the big bad red text on top of each page of the Laser Forum and act accordingly.

The green laser wast first used mostly by Astro-people that did use the green laser ALWAYS up in the air to aim theyr telescope !

We are talking about *high powered* and *modified* units here that go well beyond 5mW / Class IIIa. Those are forbidden to be used outside and you know it.
