OK, Here are your beamshots of the 4*XM-L with DX reflector (second from left).

Comparison shots using other torches;

Thanks Klem! Those are nice beam shots.

I'll post some of my beam shots as soon as I finish my dive light. I'm still waiting for parts (the lens).

Somebody called the animal rights activists... That dog has been abused! Nice!

HAHAHAHAHA... If you know Border Collie's they love chasing things like lights. He ('Phil') stares at my torches until I turn them on.

When he saw me filling up a basket full of torches and heading out the laneway he thought all his Christmasses were coming at once!

OK, thanks...

My thoughts are that the beamshots show how wide the DX reflector spills those 4 XM-L's. And when compared against the ability of a HID to capture and focus light the HID's win on 'throw'. You can see this when you turn them both on and converge the beams,and also in the detail of what you can see at max distance.

When compared against the Terralux 3*XR-E and the DX drop-in 5*XR-E however the sheer lumens output of the XM-Ls mean it's the same throw, but with much more usable spill...and if the torch is the same size with the similar glow time (90Wh capacity; 42W High, 21W Medium, 8W Low) then the XM-L wins hands down. Both HID's are not compact enough to carry in a BC pouch and you need a separate bulky combat pouch hanging off the BC.

Brightest torch on both throw and spill is the 75W HID.

For daytime diving my torch is now the Obi 1 Kenobe Light Sabre, and night diving will be the 75W HID with the Luke Skywalker as back-up

Be interesting to see what beam you get if 2 of the 4 XM-Ls were focussed by aspherics and the other two with reflector (I don't think TIR would fit in a quad...but would in a tri-Mag design). Can't seem to find the small 22mm aspherics anywhere...they all seem sold out.

Maybe it's just the camera settings but the spill on the Light Sabre looks greater than the 75W HID and throw looks pretty close. The aim varied a bit in the pictures. The 75W HID aimed at the far bush on the right and the Light Sabre aimed on the white wall to the left.

The overall picture had more illumination (to me) with the Light Sabre and the far wall on the left was well lit up. I have a feeling the 75W HID could have illuminated the truck parked just past that far white wall on the left and maybe the Light Sabre couldn't get quite that far but that's not much of a difference particularly considering the power requirements (75W vs 40W).

Nice pictures! I'm not usually into beam shots since they don't usually show much but using these lights and that alley worked out great.
