Help me out here. I looking for the best all around lantern, that fits the following specs:

4 D Cell
Bright
Dimmable
LED or Fluorescent
Long life
water resistant or proof

I bought one of those 12 LED lanterns, which I like, but when recently compared with a $20 Fluorescent Coleman lantern, it doesn't hold a candle to it, so to speak, in terms of output. Now granted, the Coleman does use 8 D cells. I'd rather stick with a 4 D cell lantern, but I want higher output than the 12 LED. TIA

Even though it's not so great in the water resistance department (don't drop it in a puddle, etc) I would say the best 4D lantern I've seen to date is the Energizer folding dual tube flourescent. You can run one or two tubes, it's quite bright on just one even, will run for a claimed (I haven't tested it, yet!) 40 hours on 1 tube, and is quite compact. Try it, you'll like it!

Hello Jfletc,

If you compare your LED lantern with the fluorescent lantern in cold weather you will see quite a difference. Fluorescent lanterns get quite dim when the temperatures drop below 50 F.
